Koska työssä olevissa kytkennöissä on jännitteisiä osia, on siinä perehdyttävä sähköturvallisuuteen.
Class-D amplifiers advantage to conventional A- or AB-class amplifiers is their high efficiency and small size. Additionally they are inexpensive and it is able to install smaller heat sinks because of their high efficiency.
In this research we make an application where we upgrade the AB-class amplifier that works as Peavey Solo guitar amplifiers audio power amplifier to the class-D amplifier that represents newer and more powerful amplifier class. In this research we investigate how the class-D amplifier operates compared to the original amplifier by measuring typical electrical characteristics of a guitar amplifier. The research is performed by measurements.
This work has parts that include voltage, so it’s necessary to take electrical safety into account. The class-D amplifier sets certain electrical requirements for the power supply and speaker element of the upgraded amplifier, so this work represents also their selection for the upgraded amplifier.
The upgraded amplifier produced higher sound pressure levels with the reference signals in a major part of the measurements made in the anechoic chamber. Also the output power measured from the load in the sound pressure level measurements were higher in the upgraded amplifier. The highest output power measured from the load was 72,72 W in the upgraded amplifier and it was achieved when there was 24,14 V RMS value over the load. This output power from the load was circle 36 times higher than the value of the original amplifier. The total harmonic distortion of the class-D amplifier is smaller in the anechoic chamber than the value of the AB-class amplifier. The electrical frequency response of the class-D amplifier and the AB-class amplifier are quite different. It can be seen in the electrical frequency response of the AB-class amplifier that the AB-class amplifier amplifies certain frequencies. The electrical frequency response of the class-D amplifier is nearly flat. The acoustic frequency response of the class-D amplifier installed is not so flat than the acoustic frequency response of the original amplifier. It also seems that the upgraded amplifier has a narrower frequency range than the original amplifier. More research should be made to the factors that have effect on the acoustic frequency response if the sound of the upgraded amplifier would like to be improved.
