This paper examines the various development options for the different processes of the tunnel excavation in a civil engineering company. Human population’s growth together with the overcrowding of urban areas has increased the profitability of underground construction. New technological developments and competition in the business has produced a great development pressure. This study examines a lot of different model-based processes and the use of data communications connections in the challenging tunnel construction conditions. Destination work site that is used in the study is an excavation site of Finnish and international companies’ consortium. The goal is to find working development areas and ideas for model-based production control and quality assurance, as well as the correct method for data communication solution for the Finnish company in the future tunnel construction sites.
The study is a qualitative study, in which was tested the different software used in the different stages of the processes, interviews with company personnel, as well as various experts in the field of civil engineering. Based on the information obtained in the study, perspective was got of what the different processes stages and tools should target company focus on in its development in the future.
In the conclusions, the tunnel excavation should be developed as the whole process in mind. The entire mining process should be synchronized and controlled by work site supervisors as a whole and in real-time. This requires the most effective and user-friendly tools for supervisors.
