Ultraäänikäsitellyn hitsatunliitoksen väsymiskestävyys on suurempi korkeamman lujuuden omaavilla teräksillä. Tästä syystä korkealujuuksisten terästen käyttö ultraäänikäsiteltynä väsyttävästi kuormitetuissa kevytrakenteissa on perusteltua. Fatigue performance of welded structures can be improved by post weld improvement
methods. Ultrasonic impact treatment is a post weld improvement method, which
modifies the weld geometry and introduces favorable compressive residual stress. The
fatigue strength of non-load carrying attachments in as-welded condition has been
experimentally compared with UI treated weldsfor both grades of steel under constant
and variable amplitude loading.
Better improvement was achieved for ultrasonic impact treated specimens for constant
and variable amplitude loading than for as-welded structures. In the case of as-welded
structures, the base material strength does not have any significant improvement in
fatigue life, as the stress concentration at the weld toe and its geometry are responsible
for fatigue failure. The fatigue life of ultrasonic impact treated specimens of high
strength steels is greater than that of low strength steels. The base material strength
has its influence in the fatigue life improvement. Thushigh strength steels can be
used in lightweight applications.
