Tiivistelmä
Pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena on operationalisoida T&K- yhteistyön prosessimaista luonnetta, eli tarkemmin sanottuna analysoida T&K-yhteistyösuhteidenmuodostumista ja motiiveja. Tutkielman hypoteesit muodostettiin analysoimalla yrityksen teknologiastrategiaan perustuvia uuden tiedon tuonnin ja olemassa olevan tiedon hyväksikäytön oppimistavoitteita. Motivaatio T&K- yhteistyölle syntyy mahdollisuudesta T&K- projektien riskien jakamiseen. T&K- yhteistyön motiiveja analysoitiin transaktio- ja byrokratiahyötyjen, jotka pohjautuvat mittakaava- ja synergiaeduille, lähteitä arvioiden.
Hypoteeseja testattiin 276 suomalaisen teollisuusyrityksen otoksella. Otoksen yrityksillä oliollut T&K- toimintaa. Otos perustuu kyselyyn, joka toteutettiin Lappeenrannan teknillisen yliopiston kauppatieteiden osastolla vuonna 2004. Hypoteeseja testattiin tilastollisilla menetelmillä; lineaarisella regressioanalyysillä, parillisten ja riippumattomien otosten t-testeillä. Validiteetti- ja multikollineaarisuusongelman todennäköisyydet on huomioitu.
Hypoteesit vahvistuivat osittain. Teknologisella epävarmuudella ja monimutkaisuudella ei ole suoraa vaikutusta T&K- yhteistyön intensiivisyyteen. Teknologisella epävarmuudella on osittainen vaikutus teknologiastrategian valintaan. Teknologiaintensiivisyyteen perustuvien erot perustuvat teknologisen tiedon luonteeseen toimialalla. Transaktiokustannusteorian mukainenkustannusten minimointi ja kompetenssiperusteisten teorioiden mukainen strategisointi selittävät komplementaarisesti T&K-yhteistyösuhteiden muodostumista ja yrityksen rajojen määräytymistä. The objective of this master's thesis is to operationalize the processual nature of R&D co-operation, and more precisely, to explore formation and motives of R&D co-operation. Hypotheses of this study are constructed by analyzing firm's, exploration and exploitation, technology strategy based learning objectives. Motivation for R&D co-operation arises from possibility to share risks of R&D projects. Motives for R&D co-operation are analyzed also by evaluating sources of transaction and management benefits. Firm's transaction benefits, which rely on economies of scale and scope, are assumed to be dependent on capabilities.
Hypotheses are tested with sample of 276 Finnish manufacturing firms that have carried out R&D activities. The sample is based on the questionnaire carried out in Lappeenranta University of Technology Department of Business Administration in year 2004. The hypotheses are tested by statistical methods including linear regression analysis, paired and independent samples t-tests. Possibilities for the validity and multicollinearity problems are considered.
The hypotheses were partly supported. Technological uncertainty and complexity has no direct effect on the intensity of R&D co-operation. Technological uncertainty has a partial effect on choosing the technology strategy. Firm's transaction and management benefits depend on technological capabilities. Only firms from high technology sectors do achieve benefits also by intensive coordination of R&D co-operation. The technology intensity based differences are based on the nature of technological knowledge in the sector. Both, the transaction cost theory based economizing and competence theory based strategizing, are complementary when analyzing formation of R&D co-operation and boundaries of the firm.
