The integration of wood chip prehydrolysis and logging residue hydrolysis processes to a pulp mill for the production of bioethanol was studied in this thesis work. A simulation model of this biorefinery was created with WinGEMS simulation software to examine the effects of the bioethanol process on the pulp mill mass and energy balances as well as the preliminary profitability of the biorefinery. In the simulation, three cases were considered with a pine pulp production of 1000 Adt / day and with an amount of logging residue of 10 % of the pulp wood needed: 1) Prehydrolysis of wood chips and hydrolysis of logging residue for the production of ethanol 2) Prehydrolysis of wood chips, logging residue burnt in the bark boiler 3) No prehydrolysis, logging residue burnt in the bark boiler Compared to case 3, the prehydrolysis of wood chips prior to cooking in cases 1 and 2 increases the wood consumption by 16 %. With the increased wood consumption, in case 1, 149 t / day of ethanol and 240 MWh more of excess power is produced. In case 2, 68 t / day of ethanol and 460 MWh more of excess power is produced. This would generate a net annual additional cashflow of 18.8 million euros in case 1 and 9.4 million in case 2. The evaporation of the hydrolysis product liquor, hydrolyzate, and the evaporation and burning of the organic residues from the hydrolysis processes increase the load on the evaporation plant and recovery boiler. Compared to case 3, in cases 1 and 2 the evaporation plant has to be expanded from a 5-effect plant to a 7-effect plant and the required heat transfer areas have to be doubled. The load on the recovery boiler increases by 39 % in case 1 and by 26 % in case 2.
