Altistuminen PAH-yhdisteille kreosoottikyllästetyn puun käsittelyssä
Partanen, Hanna (2010)
The aim of this study was to assess exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in handling of the creosote treated wood. Furthermore the aim was to find out reasons for the exposure and to clarify what commitments the exposure sets to the employer. The study was carried out from the point of view of occupational safety.
The research material consisted of measurements taken in the field. The research material was collected in the summer 2009 from three sites where the creosote treated wood was handled. The areas are located in the Eastern Finland. To find out the exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons the workers were asked to give urine samples. The research was implemented with the help of analyzing biomonitoring samples for 1-hydroxypyrene which is one the most commonly used indicator of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. To find out the reasons what causes the exposure the workers were interviewed and observed during their work.
The analysis of the results showed that workers were exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during their work. There is no biological action level for urinary 1-hydroxypyrene yet but the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health is drafting the level. Although there are legal obligations what has to be done to minimize the exposure to carcinogenic material as PAHs. According to the results there is further need to improve the actions being done for occupational safety. Especially more attention must be paid to skin protection.
