Tiivistelmä
Tutkimus on tehty Tekesin DTP-ohjelman Sinfonet-tutkimusprojektin puitteissa aikavälillä 2009-2011.
This study has been done within the framework of the Finnish Technology Agency (Tekes) Digital Product Process programme’s Sinfonet research project in 2009 - 2011. The aim of the study has been to construct a comprehensive product and information life-cycle management (PLM) road map and development plan for a small engineering company. Specifically, this work focuses on an engineer-to-order product customized according to customer requirements, and on the systematization of the PLM in a small and medium sized enterprise (SME).While the PLM roadmap has been drawn up for a case company, it may be, under certain conditions, also applied to the PLM development of other SMEs and engineering companies.
In the theory section, the specific characteristics of the case company are examined first with the aim to understand the peculiarities of an SME and an engineering firm, and their impact on the development of PLM. Secondly, the five key areas of PLM are presented. The use of one- and five dimensional PLM maturity models for assessing the current state of a company is explored. Furthermore, a comprehensive PLM model for an engineering company is constructed along with an eight step PLM development path.
The PLM-model structures knowledge management through processes, and it consists of five sections: 1) Strategy identifies the customer needs and determines products and how processes must run in order to satisfy these needs; 2) Processes are the core, where generic product models, as well as products and structures, are developed and as a result of which individual products are delivered to customers; 3) Structures are based on the selected product and knowledge management strategies. The role of these structures is to support and boost the operational processes; 4) Culture and people form the intellectual capital, and as a result of their action the processes run and products are delivered to customers; 5) Information technology is a tool that is used in processes and in up-dating of data and information structures, mainly for creation, acquisition, storing, sharing and application of documented knowledge.
The case study describes the current state of the target company on the five key areas of PLM. A PLM maturity and “as-is” situation is assessed using the two evaluation models. The “to-be” situation of the company is defined and an initial PLM roadmap is presented. Ultimately, a PLM roadmap and a development plan are compiled based on a comprehensive PLM model.
