Tiivistelmä
Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää onko kansainvälisen hajauttamisen hyöty heikentynyt globaalisti ajan kuluessa.
The purpose of this Master`s thesis is to examine whether the benefits of international diversification has decreased over time. The methodology employed in the empirical part of the thesis is based on correlation tests and the Box M-test.
The theoretical framework used in this thesis consists of the modern portfolio theory developed by Markowitz, international diversification and other earlier studies on those subjects.
The empirical data consists of total return indices produced by Thompson’s DataStream Financial with coverage of 30 countries around the globe and nine regional indexes. The countries are divided to 18 developed and 12 emerging markets. All index returns are measured in dollars. The data set covers the years 1995-2009 including 783 weekly observations, for each total return index.
The results show that the benefits of international portfolio diversification are larger from emerging countries compared to developed countries. While diversification benefits were much larger from emerging countries in the beginning of the sample, a lot of the difference period, the relative benefits compared to developed countries has decreased towards the end of the 1995-2009 period. The correlation coefficients have generally risen during that period, but there are subperiods within the full sample period during which the correlations have decreased.
