In this bachelor’s thesis design criteria for micro-CHP power plant utilizing an externally fired gas turbine process are examined. Also, the suitability of the process for local power generation, for example, in touch with detached house’s heating is investigated. The components of the power plant are identified with the most eligible structures and operating values to enable the plant to operate in the real world while meeting the requirements set for it. The suitability of a small car turbocharger for the task is considered as a numerical example and the design is based on turbo’s operating values.
The aim of the work is to determine the design criteria and operating values for the power plant components and to find out how the power received from fuel is distributed between heating and electricity production. In this work the effect of electricity production to combustion process is also examined. Finally, the answer for the question whether the power plant is technically possible and rational or not is assessed. The research has been done utilizing written and computational methods.
The EFGT process is very rarely used world wide for combined heat and power production due to its poor electricity production efficiency. However, for rural areas the process might be appropriate since it allows using any fuel that suits for a boiler. All kinds of fuels can be used in the process because the flue gases do not flow through the turbine and dirt it. A counter flow heat exchanger (heat transfer mainly by convection) and a high-speed generator, connected to the same shaft with the compressor and the turbine, are designed for the power plant. The design is made based on the desired operating values determined by the job subscriber to fulfill the need of normal loads in a detached house.
Technically the power plant is possible to be implemented, but it is probably finally not feasible. The required heat exchanger area is so large that its implementation as a counter flow heat exchanger is not feasible in practice. In addition, the required boiler output power to achieve desired operating values is twice a normal detached house’s heating demand due to the poor electricity output efficiency of the process. The power plant generator is feasible and would be very compact in size. If the isentropic efficiency of the compressor and turbine could be improved, the power plant could become feasible at its physical size and cost.
