Nowadays, companies are launching new products at an even faster pace, while removing old products out of product portfolio and production. Product phase out does not bring revenue to company, but product phase out without a clearly defined phase out process can put the company at risk of substantial extra material costs and tie up scarce resources in production. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the end of the product life cycle, to find out the measures and responsibilities related to product phase out, and to create a product phase out process for the material management organization.
Product lifecycle management and material management related to product phase out are presented in the literature review. The empirical part of the thesis describes the development of product lifecycle management and product phase out processes in the case company and then presents the results of those processes. At the end there is also a section about a real product phase out that was conducted during process development. The resulted process gives the company the opportunity to anticipate the phase out of the product and as a result minimize the scrapping costs of surplus materials. As the result of the thesis, it is noticed that a timely and well-communicated plan, as well as good data management, greatly reduce the problems and costs associated with product phase outs both in the company and in the supply chain.
