<title>WACC assumptions and sector coupling concept in 100% renewable energy systems</title>
<link>http://lutpub.lut.fi:80/handle/10024/172718</link>
<description>WACC assumptions and sector coupling concept in 100% renewable energy systems
Tariq, Muhammad Arsalan
The transition to 100% renewable energy systems depends not only on technological choices but also on the financial assumptions used in modelling and the terminology applied to interactions among energy sectors. This research examines both issues through two systematic analyses of the literature concerning geographically defined energy systems achieving at least a 95% renewable energy share in one or more sectors.&#13;
&#13;
The financial analysis covered 1,067 articles published between 1975 and 2023. A weighted average cost of capital (WACC) was reported in 55.2% of the studies, while 44.8% did not disclose this assumption. Among the reporting studies, 65.5% applied a single WACC value and 34.5% used multiple values. Reported values ranged from -5% to 35%, with a mean of 6.5%, and a median of 6.0%. The WACC values were broadly aligned with historical benchmarks in Europe, the Middle East, and Northeast Asia, but were generally lower in several other regions. Explicit representation of changing financing conditions over time remained uncommon.&#13;
&#13;
The sector coupling analysis was based on 1,384 articles published between 1975 and 2025. Among these articles, 744 addressed more than one energy sector and were screened for 28 terms grouped into 13 terminology families. At least one selected term was identified in 495 multi-sector studies, whereas 249 used none of the predefined terms. Sector coupling was the most widely used terminology family and overlapped substantially with energy integration, cross-sector, smart energy system, and sector integration terminology. Term definitions were found in only 68 studies and varied considerably in scope and meaning. The results indicate growing convergence around sector coupling without complete terminology standardisation.&#13;
&#13;
Both analyses identify limitations in the transparency and comparability of 100% renewable energy system research. Clearer reporting of WACC specifications, sector boundaries, model scope, and term definitions would support more consistent interpretation and comparison of future studies.

<title>Biomassan energiakäyttö nyt ja tulevaisuudessa Euroopan unionissa</title>
<link>http://lutpub.lut.fi:80/handle/10024/172717</link>
<description>Biomassan energiakäyttö nyt ja tulevaisuudessa Euroopan unionissa
Aalto, Aatu
Biomassa tarjoaa loistavan ratkaisun ilmastonmuutosta vastaan taistelemiseen ja fossiilisista polttoaineista irtautumiseen. Biomassalla tarkoitetaan biologista alkuperää olevaa tuotteiden, jätteiden ja tähteiden biohajoavaa osaa. Biomassaa kerätään maataloudesta, metsätaloudesta ja jätevirroista. Biomassan tehollinen lämpöarvo on matalampi kuin fossiilisten polttoaineiden.  &#13;
&#13;
Biomassalla on tärkeä rooli EU:n energiajärjestelmässä. Kiinteät biomassat ovat tyypillisimpiä hyödynnettäviä EU:ssa. Biomassasta tuotetaan sähköä, lämpöä ja biopolttoaineita Euroopassa. Biokaasun ja biometaanin tuotantomäärät ovat viime vuosien aikana olleet kasvussa. Euroopan maiden välillä on suuria eroja energiajärjestelmien energialähteiden koostumuksessa.  &#13;
&#13;
EU:n tavoitteet ja säätämät lait pyrkivät kääntämään EU:n suunnan kohti päästötöntä tulevaisuutta. Kestävän biomassan määritelmää on rajoitettu RED III -direktiivillä. Tulevaisuus näyttää mikä biomassan rooli on. Biomassan tulevaisuuden roolia voi arvioida nykyisten investointien ja säädösten avulla. Eurooppaan on viime vuosina rakennettu paljon uusia biometaanilaitoksia. Biokaasulla ja -metaanilla on korvattu maakaasua Euroopassa. Energiayhtiöt tekevät polttoainemuutoksia ja pyrkivät löytämään sitä kautta uusia energiavirtoja. EU tukee hankkeita, jotka pyrkivät löytämään vähäpäästöisempiä vaihtoehtoja kohti vihreää siirtymää.  &#13;
&#13;
Tulevaisuudessa biomassan todennäköinen rooli löytyy hiilidioksidin talteenoton ja varastoinnin kyljestä. Tavoitteena on ratkaista energiasiirtymä energiaintensiivisiltä aloilta biomassan avulla. Jätteistä voidaan jalostaa biopolttoaineita ja talteen otettua hiilidioksidia voidaan käyttää synteettisten polttoaineiden raaka-aineena.; Biomass is an excellent solution for fighting against climate change and phasing out of fossil fuels. Biomass refers to the biodegradable parts of products, waste, and residues of biological origin. Biomass is collected from agriculture, forestry, and waste streams. The net calorific value of biomass is lower than fossil fuels.  &#13;
&#13;
Biomass plays an important role in the EU’s energy system. Solid biomass is the most utilized form in the EU. Biomass is used to produce electricity, heat, and biofuels in Europe. The production volumes of biogas and biomethane have been growing in recent years. There are significant differences between European countries regarding the composition of energy sources in their energy systems.  &#13;
&#13;
The EU’s objectives and laws aim to steer the EU towards an emission-free future. The definition of sustainable biomass has been restricted by the RED III directive. The future will eventually show what the role of biomass will be. The future role of biomass can be evaluated through current investments and regulations. Many new biomethane plants have been built in Europe during recent years. Natural gas has been replaced by biogas and biomethane in some amounts in Europe. Energy companies are making fuel transitions and thereby striving to find new energy streams. The EU supports projects that are aimed to find lower-emission alternatives towards the green transition.  &#13;
&#13;
In the future, the probable role of biomass will be found alongside carbon capture and storage. The goal is to solve the energy transition in energy-intensive sectors with the help of biomass. Waste can be refined into biofuels in the future and the captured carbon dioxide can be used as a material for synthetic fuels.

<title>LDR-50 liten häiriö- ja onnettomuustapauksien analyysi TRACE-laskentaohjelmalla</title>

<description>LDR-50 liten häiriö- ja onnettomuustapauksien analyysi TRACE-laskentaohjelmalla
Pakarinen, Elias
Energiantarve olosuhteista riippumattomiin energianlähteisiin on lisännyt kiinnostusta ydinvoimaan, etenkin uudet pienet modulaariset ydinreaktorit (Small modular Reactors, SMR) ovat olleet kiinnostuksen kohteena niiden uusien ratkaisujen vuoksi. SMR-konseptit lupaavat lyhyempiä rakennusaikoja ja pienempiä investointeja verrattuna perinteisiin suuriin ydinvoimalaitoksiin. Uudet ydinreaktorikonseptit tuovat mukanaan uusia tapoja täyttää turvallisuusvaatimuksia ja -järjestelmiä. Tässä työssä tarkastellaan uusia turvallisuusjärjestelmiä ja keskitytään deterministisiin turvallisuusanalyyseihin viranomaisnäkökulmasta.&#13;
&#13;
Työssä tarkastellaan VTT:n LDR-50 Lite benchmarkissa esiteltyä SMR-reaktoria TRACE-systeemikoodilla. Mallinnettaviksi turvallisuusanalyysien tapauksiksi on valittu reaktorin ajaminen vakiotilaan kylmätilasta ja laitoksen sähkönmenetys (Station Blackout, SBO). Työn tavoitteena on luoda TRACE-malli, jolla voidaan erityisesti tarkastella LDR-50 Lite:n jälkilämmönpoistoturvallisuusjärjestelmää sekä luoda malli, jota voidaan helposti laajentaa tulevaisuudessa. Mallinnustapaus valittiin LDR-50 Lite:ssä erityispiirteiden vuoksi, reaktorissa korostuu passiiviset turvallisuusjärjestelmät ja suurista laitoksista poikkeavat prosessiarvot.&#13;
&#13;
Työssä saatiin tehtyä TRACE malli, joka toimii pohjana muiden turvallisuusanalyysien laatimiselle. Malli kuitenkin vaatii vielä jatko kehitystä välitilan ja altaan mallinnuksessa.; The growing need for energy sources that are independent of external conditions has increased interest in nuclear power. In particular, Small Modular Reactors (SMR) have been in the point of interest recently. SMR concepts promise shorter construction times and lower investment costs compared to traditional large nuclear power plants. New reactor concepts introduce new approaches to meeting safety requirements and implementing safety systems. This thesis covers new safety systems and is focused on deterministic analysis from regulatory perspective.&#13;
&#13;
The SMR reactor presented in this thesis is VTT’s LDR-50 Lite benchmark which was chosen to be modelled with TRACE-systemcode. The safety analysis scenarios selected for modelling include station blackout (SBO) and bringing the reactor to hot full power steady state. The goal of the thesis is to make a TRACE model which is mainly focused on LDR-50 Lites decay heat removal safety system and make a model that can easily be expanded further in the future. LDR-50 Lite was chosen because of its emphasis on passive safety systems, and the process parameters differ from those of large nuclear reactors.&#13;
&#13;
TRACE model was created in this thesis, which acts as a base for other safety analyses that are not covered in this thesis. However, the model still needs additional development regarding the area between reactor pressure vessel and the containment and the pool.

<title>Keravan Energian luontojalanjälki vuonna 2024</title>
<link>http://lutpub.lut.fi:80/handle/10024/172715</link>
<description>Keravan Energian luontojalanjälki vuonna 2024
Eini, Laura
Luonnon monimuotoisuus heikkenee nopeammin kuin koskaan aikaisemmin ihmiskunnan historiassa, kun käynnissä on kuudes sukupuuttoaalto, jonka aiheuttajana on ihminen. Luontokadon hillitsemiseksi on tärkeää tunnistaa sitä aiheuttavia tekijöitä ja kehittää toimivia ja luotettavia mittareita vaikutusten arviointiin. Tässä diplomityössä selvitettiin Keravan Energian oman toiminnan aiheuttama luontojalanjälki vuonna 2024. Työssä huomioitiin Keravan Energian toimintaympäristö sähkön- ja kaukolämmön siirtäjänä, tuottajana sekä sähkönmyyjänä. Yhtiön näkökulmasta keskeisimmiksi luontokadon ajureiksi rajattiin maankäyttö sekä ilmastonmuutos. Diplomityössä laskettiin, kuinka suuri luontojalanjälki kohdistuu maa- sekä vesiekosysteemeihin näiden ajureiden vaikutuksen kautta. Tutkimuksessa käytettiin kahta eri laskentatapaa: Excel-laskennassa hyödynnettiin yhtiön omaa dataa ja openLCA-elinkaarimallinnusohjelmaan yhdistettiin europohjaisiin hankintoihin perustuva tietokanta EXIOBASE.&#13;
&#13;
Keravan Energian luontojalanjälki vuonna 2024 oli maaekosysteemien osalta 89 218 pPDF ja vesiekosysteemien osalta 17 009 pPDF. Maaekosysteemeille luontohaittaa aiheutti ajureista merkittävästi enemmän ilmastonmuutos (61 %) kuin maankäyttö (39 %). Vesiekosysteemien luontojalanjälkeä tarkasteltiin ainoastaan ilmastonmuutoksen kautta. Tulokset osoittivat, että luontojalanjäljen pienentämisessä olennaista on kiinnittää huomiota ilmastovaikutusten vähentämiseen energiantuotannon polttoainevalintojen kautta sekä hankintojen osalta suosia luonnon kannalta kestävämpiä raaka-ainevalintoja ja vastuullisten alihankkijoiden käyttöä.; Biodiversity loss is deteriorating more rapidly than at any other time in human history as the sixth mass extinction occurs, driven by human activities. It is important to identify the factors that cause biodiversity loss and to develop functional and reliable indicators for assessing impacts. This master’s thesis examined the biodiversity footprint of Keravan Energia’s operations in 2024. The assessment considered the company’s role as a producer and disctributor of electricity and district heating, as well as an electricity retailer. From the company's perspective, land use and climate change were identified as the most significant drivers of biodiversity loss. The study quantified the biodiversity footprint affecting terrestial and freshwater ecosystems through these two drivers. Two complementary calculation methods were applied: an Excel-based assessment using the company’s operational data and life cycle modelling with openLCA, combined with the environmentally extended input-output database, EXIOBASE.&#13;
&#13;
The biodiversity footprint of Keravan Energia in 2024 was 89 218 pPDF for terrestrial ecosystems and 17 009 pPDF for aquatic ecosystems. Climate change (61 %) caused significantly more damage to the terrestrial ecosystems than land use (39 %). Aquatic biodiversity footprint was assessed only through climate change. The results indicate that reducing the company’s biodiversity footprint requires lowering climate impacts through fuel choices in energy production and promoting biodiversity-friendly procurement by favoring more sustainable raw materials and responsible subcontractors.
