<title>Effect of additives on the hydrometallurgical leaching of lithium from LFP battery waste</title>
<link>http://lutpub.lut.fi:80/handle/10024/172649</link>
<description>Effect of additives on the hydrometallurgical leaching of lithium from LFP battery waste
Wikström, Oliver
The use of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries has grown considerably and with it the need for their efficient recycling. LFP batteries are used especially in electric vehicles due to their safety features and cost efficiency. Despite the need, currently the recycling rate for these batteries remains very low, as the cathode material lacks valuable materials, such as cobalt or nickel, which lowers the economic incentive. This has created a need for more effective and economically viable methods. &#13;
&#13;
This bachelor's thesis reviews the recycling methods used for LFP batteries and how they are being optimised through the use of additives. The work is based on literature sources, from which a comprehensive review of the field has been compiled. This thesis presents the structure and working principles of LFP batteries as well as four key methods of recycling: pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, biohydrometallurgy and direct regeneration. The main focus is on hydrometallurgical methods and the oxidising additives used with them for improving selectivity, such as hydrogen peroxide, sodium persulphate and sodium hypochlorite. The thesis also covers some significant recent research findings in this field. &#13;
&#13;
The key takeaway from the thesis is that the choice of additive and dosage are critical factors for selectivity. From the recent findings, it becomes clear that the industry is moving towards methods that are more environmentally friendly and industrially scalable, in order to meet the growing need for recycling.; Litium rauta fosfaattiakkujen (LFP) käyttö on kasvanut huomattavasti ja samalla tarve niiden tehokkaalle kierrättämiselle on korostunut. LFP-akkuja käytetään etenkin sähköautoissa johtuen niiden turvallisuuden ja edullisen hinnan tuomista eduista. Tällä hetkellä kierrätysaste näille akuille on erittäin alhainen, koska katodimateriaali ei sisällä arvokkaita metalleja, kuten kobolttia tai nikkeliä. Tästä on syntynyt tarve entistä tehokkaammille ja taloudellisesti kannattavammille kierrätysmenetelmille. &#13;
&#13;
Tässä kandidaatintyössä käydään läpi LFP-akkujen kierrätysmenetelmiä sekä sitä, miten niitä on optimoitu erilaisilla lisäaineilla. Työ pohjautuu kirjallisuuslähteisiin ja niiden perusteella on tehty kattava katsaus alan menetelmiin. Työssä esitellään LFP-akkujen toimintaperiaate ja rakenne sekä vertaillaan neljää keskeistä kierrätysmenetelmää; pyrometallurgiaa, hydrometallurgiaa, biohydrometallurgiaa ja suoraa regenerointia. Työn pääpaino on hydrometallurgisessa liuotuksessa käytettävien hapettavien lisäaineiden, kuten vetyperoksidin, natriumpersulfaatin, natriumhypokloriitin ja rautasuolojen, vertailussa ja niiden roolissa prosessin selektiivisyyden parantamisessa. Työssä käydään myös läpi muutama merkittävä uusi tutkimustulos tältä sektorilta. &#13;
&#13;

<title>Deep learning-based facial expression recognition and eye-tracking for detecting cognitive strain in university students</title>
<link>http://lutpub.lut.fi:80/handle/10024/172646</link>
<description>Deep learning-based facial expression recognition and eye-tracking for detecting cognitive strain in university students
Voleti, Padma Shreya Harika
Cognitive strain among university students is characterised by sustained mental overload and reduced capacity to process academic material. Current detection relies almost exclusively on self-report questionnaires, which miss real-time signals and are prone to response bias. A convolutional neural network was trained on the combined FER2013 and CK+ datasets, achieving 62.0% test accuracy on 7,360 samples, within the human-level range reported in the literature (65 ± 5%). The model was integrated into a webcam-based pipeline with dlib and MediaPipe Iris eye-tracking, producing a composite strain score from blink rate, PERCLOS, gaze jitter, iris diameter, and emotion classification, piloted with five students during a reading task.&#13;
&#13;
The pipeline produced coherent strain scores across all five sessions, rising at reading onset and at the transition to comprehension questions. The eye-tracking channels behaved as expected, while the emotion channel showed a systematic bias toward misclassifying concentration as sadness. Strain scores partially corresponded with self-reported mental demand (r = 0.471), with stronger correspondence between comprehension performance and self-perceived success (r = 0.943). This thesis demonstrates the feasibility of a webcam-only cognitive strain detection system as a foundation for student wellbeing tools.

<title>Design and implementation of a comprehensive quality evaluation system for university students</title>

<description>Design and implementation of a comprehensive quality evaluation system for university students
Sun, Tiege
Traditional university student evaluation often depends heavily on academic scores, while students' practical ability, innovation experience, social participation and career preparation may not be fully reflected. Therefore, a more comprehensive, transparent and configurable evaluation method is needed to support student development and educational management. This thesis designs and implements a web-based comprehensive quality evaluation prototype for university students. The system combines five dimensions: academic performance, practice and project ability, innovation and competition, social participation and career development. It uses configurable weighted scoring as the official result and provides an unweighted reference score to observe balanced development. The developed system uses a Vue 3 frontend, a Spring Boot backend and an H2/MySQL database structure, and it supports bilingual display, student management, raw data input, evaluation standard configuration, search and sorting, dimension range filtering, weighted/unweighted reports, radar charts with active weights, explanation-based suggestions, secondary password verification and security settings. The system also defines a privacy-aware student access boundary: students should only view their own evaluation information, while teachers and administrators manage broader data according to their responsibilities. The prototype demonstrates the feasibility of a configurable, explainable and privacy-aware student evaluation platform.

<title>Nopeiden reaktoreiden lämmönvaihtimet</title>
<link>http://lutpub.lut.fi:80/handle/10024/172639</link>
<description>Nopeiden reaktoreiden lämmönvaihtimet
Lappalainen, Eevertti
Tässä kandidaatin tutkielmassa käsitellään nopeiden reaktoreiden lämmönvaihtimia sekä niiden suunnitteluun liittyviä ongelmia. Tutkielmassa suunnitellaan lämmönvaihdin nopean natriumjäähdytteiseen pienreaktoriin, jonka terminen teho on 714 MW ja sähköteho 300 MW. Nopeat reaktorit ovat ydinreaktorin tyyppi, jotka eroavat perinteisemmistä reaktoreista esimerkiksi: hidastetta ei ole ollenkaan. Näille on ominaista erikoisemmat jäähdytteet, kuten natrium, lyijy ja helium. Primääri- ja sekundääripiirien suuret lämpötilaerot aiheuttavat merkittäviä haasteita lämmönvaihtimen suunnittelussa jäähdytteiden ja materiaalien näkökulmasta.&#13;
&#13;
Raskasmetallijäähdytteiden ongelmat ilmenevät usein lämmönvaihtimissa. Johtuen näiden suuresta tiheydestä, pienetkin virtausnopeuden kasvut aiheuttavat merkittäviä painehäviöitä. Kaasujäähdytteisten reaktoreiden ongelmat kohdistuvat primääripiirin paineistukseen, sekä jäähdytteen saatavuuteen. Sulasuolareaktorit ovat lupaavia myös nopeaan reaktoritekniikkaan, mutta montaa nopeaa prototyyppi- tai testireaktoria ei ole rakennettu.&#13;
&#13;
Lämmönvaihtimen mitoituksessa päätettiin tehdä putkivaippalämmönvaihdin. Käytetyt menetelmät ovat hyvinkin perinteiset, eikä mitään erikoisratkaisuja ole käytetty. Suunniteltu lämmönvaihdin jäi painehäviöiden vuoksi hieman suureksi pienreaktorin skaalalle. Laskenta on pohjimmiltaan suuntaa antava, sillä lämpöhäviöitä ei ole huomioitu tässä laskelmassa. Pääasiallinen ongelma lämmönvaihtimen koon pienentämisessä on painehäviöt, jotka lähtevät rajuun kasvuun yli 100 kPa:n luokkaan, kun jäähdytteen virtausnopeus saavuttaa noin 5 m/s. Lämmönvaihtimen tehokkuuskaan ei ole mikään optimaalinen noin 0,33. Tämä johtuu juuri painehäviöistä, joita piti tasapainotella tehokkuuden kanssa.; In this bachelor’s thesis investigates heat exchangers of fast nuclear reactors and the challenges concerning different design elements. The thesis also includes designing a heat exchanger for a small sodium cooled fast reactor. The reactor has thermal power of 714 Mw and electrical power of 300 MW.  Fast reactors are a type of nuclear reactor which differentiates itself from more traditional type of reactors. For example, it doesn’t have a moderator which is a critical component of a pressurized water reactor or boiling water reactor. Typically, these reactors possess uncommon coolants such as sodium, lead or helium. High temperature differences in primary and secondary loops cause a significant challenge in heat ex-changer design, especially in terms of coolants and materials.&#13;
&#13;
Liquid heavy metal coolants usually face severe issues with heat exchangers. Pressure losses are the main issue in liquid which is due to their high density. This high density coupled with mediocre flow rates causes high pressure losses. In gas cooled fast reactors the main issue concerns the pressurization of the primary loop and the availability of the coolant. Molten salt reactors seem promising with fast reactor technology but not many prototype or test reactors have been built.&#13;
&#13;
In the design of the heat exchanger, it was decided that the type should be a shell and tube heat exchanger. Methods used in designing the heat exchanger are ordinary and nothing extraordinary was used. The heat exchanger is a bit large for a scale of SMR due to pressure losses. Calculations are rough and aren’t supposed to be taken as fully realistic since no loss-es are considered. Main challenge of making the heat exchanger smaller are pressure losses. The pressure losses start to get incrementally higher &gt;100 kPa when flow rate exceeds &gt;5 m/s. The efficiency of the heat exchanger isn’t ideal either with it being 0,33. That is caused by the pressure losses which had to be balanced with the efficiency.
