Tiivistelmä
Tämä tutkimus tutkii lyhyen aikavälin markkinareaktiota yrityksen antamaan positiiviseen sekä negatiiviseen tulosvaroitukseen Suomen osakemarkkinoilla. Tutkimuksessa selvitetään myös, reagoivatko markkinat vahvemmin tai pitkäkestoisemmin joko negatiiviseen tai positiiviseen tulosvaroitukseen.
Tutkimusmetodologiana käytetään tapahtumatutkimusta, joka tutkii osakemarkkinoiden reagointia tiettyyn tapahtumaan. Tutkimus käsittää 18 positiivista tulosvaroitustapahtumaa sekä 40 negatiivista tulosvaroitustapahtumaa aikavälillä 4.5.2009-18.12.2014.
Empiiristen tulosten perusteella markkinat reagoivat vahvasti molempiin tulosvaroituksiin. Positiivisen tulosvaroituksen epänormaali tuotto on tapahtumapäivänä 6,83%, kun taas kumulatiivinen epänormaalituotto aikavälillä -10, +10 on 9,52%. Negatiivisen tulosvaroituksen yhteydessä havaitaan tapahtumapäivänä -4,62% epänormaali tuotto, kun taas aikavälin -10, +10 kumulatiivinen epänormaali tuotto on yhteensä -6,44%. Näin ollen havaitaan, että markkinat reagoivat todella vahvasti sekä suhteellisen tehokkaasti yrityksen antamaan positiiviseen ja negatiiviseen tulosvaroitukseen. Markkinoiden reaktioissa havaitaan eroja positiivisen ja negatiivisen tulosvaroituksen yhteydessä reaktion vahvuudessa sekä kestossa. This study uses event study methodology, which examines the effect of certain event on a company’s stock price. This study consists of 18 positive and 40 negative earnings announcements. The events occurred from 4.5.2009 to 18.12.2014.
Based on empirical results the market reaction is strong with both positive and negative earnings announcements. The abnormal return for positive earnings announcement on the day of the event was 6,83% and the event window’s [-10, +10] cumulative abnormal return was 9,52%. With negative earnings announcement the abnormal return on the day of the event was -4,62%. The cumulative abnormal return of the event window [-10, +10] was -6,44% with negative earnings announcement. In addition, it was discovered that there was a considerable difference in both magnitude and duration of the market reaction.
