Rahastojen aineisto on kerätty Thomson Reutersin Datastream-tietokannasta.
Parhaiten tutkimuksen rahastoista suoriutuivat Pohjoismaihin sijoittavat osakerahastot. Suomalaisilla markkinoilla aktiiviset rahastot suoriutuivat passiivisia rahastoja paremmin, etenkin kasvavilla markkinoilla. Rahastotyyppien väliset erot kuitenkin supistuivat epävakailla markkinoilla. The objective of this Bachelor’s thesis is to examine on how mutual funds offered by the Finnish fund companies have performed in the Finnish, the Nordic Countries’ and the European markets. The data consists of 13 stock mutual funds, 5 mutual index funds and one exchange-traded fund. The study covers the time period from 2003 to 2015. The aim of the study is to examine does actively managed stock mutual funds create additional value to an investor in relation to the examined equity indices and mutual index funds.
The study is has an empirical approach and is based on a quantitative analysis. The data for the thesis was collected from Thomson Reuters’ Datastream database. The performance of each mutual fund is measured with continued compound, Treynor and Sharpe ratio, and the Jensen’s Alpha. Active management is also measured using Tracking Error. The Beta coefficients of the mutual funds were estimated using linear regression (OLS-method).
Based on the results of this study during analyzed period, the passive mutual index fund approach didn’t create any additional value to an investor. On average, the stock mutual funds seemed to create additional value compared to their risk. Those stock mutual funds that invested solely on the Nordic Countries, outperformed other funds. In the Finnish market, the mutual stock funds outperformed the mutual index funds.
