Ei-taloudellisella informaatiolla on kasvava merkitys controllerin työnkuvassa. Vastuullisuuskentässä toimiessaan controllerin roolia voidaan tutkimustulosten valossa kuvailla informaation välittäjäksi organisaation päätöksentekijöille. The aim of this research was to find out how the controller’s role has developed so far and what the role’s future prospects are. The thesis includes fresh perspectives to approach this phenomenon: non-financial information and controller’s role in the field of sustainability.
The theoretical framework consists of an extensive set of both international and Finnish literature regarding various aspects of controller’s role and its development. The research was done by using qualitative case study research method. The data was collected by semi-structured interviews with eight controllers as well as a group conversation with three controllers. All eleven controllers are working in one of the largest Finnish companies operating in the industrial sector.
The results of the research prove that controller’s role has developed, and is currently shifting, towards a more business-oriented direction. However, the job description of a modern controller still incorporates characteristics of a typical bean-counter. Yet, these traits are not expected to disappear in the near future. It was also concluded in this study that ERP systems, decentralization of the controller function and controller’s personality have the major influence on how the role develops. Furthermore, it was found out that non-financial information plays an increasingly important role in controller’s job. According to the results, controllers act as an intermediary agent in the field of sustainability, providing information for the decision-makers in the organization.
