Tiivistelmä
Työn tavoitteena on tutkia, onko Piotroskin kehittämän F-scoren avulla mahdollista päästä positiivisiin ylituottoihin vertailtavaan OMXH -indeksiin nähden. Työssä tutkittavat malliportfoliot on muodostettu vuosien 2006-2015 tunnuslukujen pohjalta. Tutkimuksessa tarkastelun kohteena ovat siis vuosittain muodostettavat portfoliot kymmenen vuoden ajalta. Työn varsinaiseksi sijoitusajaksi muodostuu aikaväli kesäkuusta 2007 aina toukokuuhun 2017. Strategia analysoi tilinpäätöstietojen perusteella yhtiöiden antamia positiivisia signaaleja. Signaalien perusteella yhtiöt pisteytetään välille 0-9. Tarkastelun jokaiselle vuodelle muodostetaan kolme portfoliota, joista kaksi on Piotrsokin -menetelmään pohjalta rakennettuja ja yksi indeksiin perustuva portfolio. Ensimmäiseen Piotroskin -menetelmän pohjalta rakennettuun F -portfolioon valittiin F-score arvoja 8 ja 9 saaneet yhtiöt ja toiseen F1 -portfolioon F-score arvoja 7, 8 ja 9 saaneet yhtiöt. Portfolioiden suoriutumista mitattiin rahoituksen työlle perinteisten menestysmittareiden kuten Sharpen luvun, Jensenin alfan ja Treynorin luvun avulla.
Työn myötä lukija pystyy tunnistamaan Piotroskin -menetelmän kannalta hyödyllisen informaation tilinpäätöstiedoista ja ymmärtämään näiden tunnuslukujen yhteyden yhtiön suoriutumiseen. Parhaimmillaan työ voi antaa lukijalle uusia työkaluja tulevien sijoituspäätösten tueksi. Tutkimuksen tarkastelussa oli Helsingin pörssin kaikki yhtiöt, jonka myötä aineiston pyörittäminen muodostui tutkimuksen työläimmäksi vaiheeksi. Tutkimuksen tulosten perusteella on Piotroskin -menetelmää hyödyntämällä päästy positiivisiin ylituottoihin. Puhtaita tuottoja ja mittareita tutkimalla parhaiten tarkastelujaksolla suoriutui F -portfolio, jonka keskimääräinen vuosituotto oli 15 %. Vertailtavan indeksin keskimääräiseksi vuosituotoksi muodostui 6,3 %. Näin portfolion ylituotto indeksiin nähden oli tarkastelujaksolla keskimäärin 8,7 %. Myös heikompi F1 -portfolio suoriutui keskimäärin indeksiä paremmin, päihittäen indeksin 2,5 %. Tarkastelujakso oli kokonaisuudessaan haastava jaksolle osuneiden merkittävien makrotaloudellisten tapahtumien johdosta. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to investigate whether it is possible to get abnormal returns by using Piotroski’s F-score in the Helsinki Stock Exchange. The possible returns are compared to the market performance which is measured by using OMX Helsinki -index. The portfolios that are being studied are formed based on the financial statements of the years 2006-2015. This makes the time frame of total 10 years long. The official investment period is from June 2007 until May 2017. The strategy analyzes the positive signals given by the studied companies. Based on these signals, the companies are given values between 0 and 9. Each year there are three formed portfolios, two of them are based on Pitroski’s strategy and the last one is measuring the market return. Portfolios that are based on the strategy, consist of high F-score values. The first portfolio is referred as F-portfolio and consists of companies with values 8 and 9. The second portfolio is called F1-portfolio and consists of companies with values 7, 8 and 9. The F1-portfolios were created due to the small sizes of the original F-portfolios. The performance of the portfolios was measured by using popular indicators such as Sharpe ratio, Jensen’s alfa and Treynor ratio. These indicators compare the risk-adjusted returns of different portfolios.
At best, this bachelor’s thesis can give the reader new tools to use in the future investment decisions. Also, it gives the knowledge to understand used financial key figures and how they affect the company's ability to make profit. When analyzing the result of this study, it is clear to say that it is possible to get abnormal returns by using Piotroski’s F-score. Largest returns were generated by F-portfolio with an average annual return of 15 %. While OMXH -index which describe the market return, generated an annual average return of 6,3 %. This means that Piotroski based F-portfolio earned average abnormal returns of 8,7 %. Also, the weaker F1-portfolio outperformed the index and earned 2,5 % higher annual average returns. Overall the review period was quite challenging due to major macroeconomic events that occurred during the research period.
