Tiivistelmä
Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena on tutkia, miten pörssiyhtiöiden ilmoitus osakkeen nimellisarvon jakamisesta eli osake splitistä, vaikuttaa osakkeen arvoon Yhdysvaltain osakemarkkinoilla vuosien 2008 - 2012 aikana.
The purpose of this thesis is to study how listed companies stock split announcements effect on stock prices in United States stock markets. Study covers 40 American listed companies which have announced splitting their stock during the years of 2008 to 2012. The companies of the study are selected so that no other events occur during the split announcement and thus effect the stock price. The stock market response to stock split announcements is tested by using the event study methodology.
Based on the empirical results of this study, split announcements do have positive reaction to stock prices. Abnormal returns the day after the event were 0,557 % and cumulative abnormal returns five days after the event were 1,46 % with the significance level of one percent. However, when analyzing these results, we see that most part of the findings were not statistically significant. Therefore, it can’t be verified that the phenomenon surely exists. According to these findings, markets also function ineffectively. That is because information received from the event reflect to stock price only after the event has occurred.
