Human capital is the most important component of intangible capital in the banking sector. Intangible capital, in turn, is among the most important forms of capital for a company’s competitiveness (Lönnqvist et al. 2009; Shih et al. 2010). Robots have become more advanced and are now an integral part of the operations of several organizations. The study investigated the role that human capital has in the use of robotics in the banking sector. It also studies how human capital and robotics are intertwined in banking organizations to-day, and how their relationship might evolve in the future.
The literature review examined use of robots in the banking sector, and whereas the review of the role of the intangible capital focused on human capital and its components. The findings from the literature formed the basis of the interviews in the empirical section of this study. The interviews were conducted using a semi-structured format for seven employees at a bank, who use robots as a part of their jobs. The transcripts were examined by using theoretical content analysis.
The analysis found 12 different themes on how human capital influences the use of a robotics, and why it is important now as well as in the future. The overarching conclusion of the interviews is that human capital plays an im-portant role in the use of the robots in the banking sector. Its role should therefore be taken into account when using the robots in banking organiza-tions. Six different topics for further research were suggested based on the findings.
