The goals to limit global warming and to produce emission free energy have increased the demand of renewable electricity production methods. The electrification of society functions increases electricity demand and, in the future, wind and solar together with nuclear power are expected to be the main electric energy production methods. In the past years, electricity microgeneration has grown strongly as a result of production technology becoming cheaper and the popularity of emission free energy production growing. As the main electricity production method of individual electricity end users, PV systems are the most popular. Their number in the Finnish distribution networks has and will continue to grow in the years to come.
Single PV systems cause hardly any disturbance in the power grid and therefore, there is no need to strengthen the grid. However, microgeneration affects the power and energy transferred in the grid. Connecting a PV system to the electricity distribution grid of a property decreases the amount of electric energy taken from the grid on a yearly level, but the effect varies greatly between individual users. Nevertheless, PV systems don’t increase the peak power of the customer’s connection point, since the highest hourly average power takes place during the winter. During the summer months, solar production equipment slightly increases the month’s highest hourly average power, but also here the variations between individual users are great.
