Tiivistelmä
Tutkielman tavoitteena on tutkia vertaisryhmää vetävien mentorien kokemuksia opetusalalla mentorin näkökulmasta. Mentorien kokemuksia peilataan vertaisryhmämentorointia käsittelevään Heirdsfield et al. (2008) teoriaan. Tutkielman kontekstina on opetusala Suomessa. Työelämään siirtyminen opintojen päättyessä on haasteellista. The objective of the thesis is to examine peer group mentor’s experiences in the context of the education field in Finland. Mentor’s experiences are reflected through Heirdsfield et al. (2008) peer group mentoring theory. According to research, it is challenging to start working right after graduation; it is acknowledged that it especially concerns teachers. The teacher is taking full pedagogical responsibility and legal liability once starting to work as a teacher. Newly graduated teachers feel lonely in the early stages of their career. There is no nationwide standardized orientation or mentoring program for teachers in Finland. Mentoring, and peer group mentoring in particular, has been found to be a useful aid to newly graduated teachers. This is a qualitative study and research method used was themes based on Heirdsfield et al. (2008) research and using them for analyzing the results. Research material consists of ten peer group mentor theme interviews. The interviews were conducted in March 2017 for professionals in different teaching positions. Benefits of the peer group mentoring in mentor’s aspect are desire to help, development and maintenance of skills and expertise, learning from self and others, sharing information and mentor’s empathy. Peer group mentors encounter challenges when they feel insecure, try to guide the peer group symmetrically and the challenging attitude of the mentee, which can be negative, passive or low motivation. Mentor’s described their role in peer group mentoring as group leader, peer, instructor who uses the dialogical methods, enabler and facilitator.
