Päiväkohtainen valuuttakurssidata on ladattu Datastreamista. Tutkimuksen tarkasteluajanjakso sijoittuu aikavälille 23.6.2016-31.10.2019.
Tutkimusmetodologiana tässä tutkielmassa toimii tapahtumatutkimus. Tapahtumatutkimusta hyödynnetään silloin, kun halutaan selvittää, johtuuko selitettävän muuttujan epänormaali vaihtelu valitusta tapahtumasta tai tapahtumasarjasta. Tapahtumatutkimus tarjoaa myös mahdollisuuden tutkia sitä, vaikuttaako tapahtuma selitettävään muuttujaan enemmän lyhyt- vai pitkäkestoisesti.
Tutkimushypoteesit muodostettiin aiemman tutkimuksen perusteella. Tulosten perusteella edistävien tapahtumien vaikutus brexitiin on tilastollisesti merkittävämpi. Tutkimuksen kolmas hypoteesi oletti, että brexittapahtumat vaikuttavat punnan kehitykseen enemmän lyhyellä kuin pitkällä aikaperiodilla. Hypoteesi jouduttiin hylkäämään, sillä testi ei antanut tilastollisesti tarpeeksi merkittäviä tuloksia. This Bachelor's thesis examines the impact of the Brexit process on the exchange rate between the pound sterling and the euro and its abnormal returns. Brexit is a historically significant process, as no country has ever withdrawn from the European Union. An explanatory variable in the study is a series of Brexit events consisting of a total of 36 Brexit-related events or news. The daily exchange rate data has been downloaded from Datastream. The review period is from June 23, 2016 to October 31, 2019
The research methodology used in this thesis is event study. Event study is used to determine whether the abnormal variation of the variable being explained is due to a selected event or series of events. Event study also offers the opportunity to investigate whether an event has more short-term or long-term effects on the variable being explained.
The research hypotheses were formed based on previous studies. There were a total of three hypotheses, of which only one could be validated based on the results of this case study. Based on the results, the Brexit process had no effect on abnormal pound yields, contrary to the hypothesis. In the second phase of this study, events were categorized according to whether they had an accelerating or a prolonging effect on Brexit. Based on the results, the impact of the accelerating events on Brexit is statistically more significant. The third hypothesis of the study assumed that Brexit events affect the pound's development more in the short term than in the long term. The hypothesis had to be rejected because the test did not produce statistically significant results.
