Kokeellisessa osassa etsittiin syitä suodatuskapasiteetin heikkenemiseen laboratoriokokeiden avulla.
Lisäksi laitoksen kuormituksesta iso osa on peräisin sakokaivolietteistä, joiden voidaan epäillä heikentävän lietteen suodatettavuutta. Mahdollisissa jatkotutkimuksissa tulisi tutkia keinoja lietteen suodatettavuuden parantamiseksi. Wastewater treatment process in Viitasaari Mustasuo plant was rebuilt into an MBR process in 2018. Six months after the plant was commissioned, its capacity began to decline. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the causes of the decline and examine possible operations to restore and maintain the capacity.
In the literature part of this thesis the operation of MBR processes was introduced, the factors affecting the filtration capacity of membrane bioreactor were surveyed and possible operations and methods to restore and maintain the filtration capacity were examined. In addition, the wastewater treatment process in Viitasaari Mustasuo plant was introduced.
The experimental part of the thesis sought causes of the filtration capacity reduction through laboratory experiments. The focus of the studies was on the functionality of the used membranes in filtration and on the filterability of the sludges. The sludge filterability of the Viitasaari MBR was compared with the sludge filterability of the Mikkeli and Parikkala MBR processes and it was noticed that there were significant differences. Factors explaining the differences were searched by examining microscopically the sludges and by inspecting the liquid part of the sludges.
The filterability of the Viitasaaris sludge was poor based on the experiments. The sludge conteined webbed and fibrous material, which could be a partial reason for the sludge’s poor filterability. In addition, a large part of the load at the Viitasaari plant comes from septage, which can be suspected of impairing the sludge’s filterability. Possible further studies should explore ways to improve sludge filterability.
