Tiivistelmä
Tämän kandidaatintutkielman tavoitteena oli tutkia New Yorkin pörssissä (NYSE) noteerattujen epäeettisten osakkeiden suoriutumista vuosina 2010-2019.
Toimialakohtaisista portfolioista alkoholiportfolio suoriutui parhaiten uhkapeliportfolion ollessa tuottojen valossa heikoin. Alhaisempien tuottojen ohella jokaisen portfolion volatiliteetti oli markkinoita suurempi. Markkinaindeksi suoriutui kokonaisuudessaan tarkasteluajanjaksolla epäeettisiä osakkeita paremmin myös riskikorjattujen mittareiden osalta ja toimialakohtainen paremmuusjärjestys säilyi identtisenä raakatuottojen vastaavaan nähden. The aim of this Bachelor’s thesis was to examine the performance of unethical stocks in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) during years 2010-2019. The comparison was made between the unethical total portfolio and S&P 500 -index which functioned as the market index. In addition, the performance of three industry-based portfolios was compared both to each other and to the market index. The portfolios were built singly for every year of the time period and they contained every stock from alcohol, tobacco and gambling industries quoted on the NYSE. The performance of unethical stocks and the market index was measured with annual returns, volatility and risk-adjusted measures that were Jensen’s alpha, Sharpe ratio and Treynor ratio.
The results of this study are partly contradictory in relation to previous studies. Based on the annual returns, both the unethical total portfolio and industry-based portfolios were outperformed by the market index. The alcohol industry’s portfolio performed best whilst the gambling industry’s portfolio had the lowest returns. Along with the lower returns, the volatility of every portfolio was higher than the volatility of the market index. Furthermore, the market index outperformed the unethical total portfolio and industry-based portfolios also based on the risk-adjusted measures. The rank order of industry-based portfolios remained the same as it was while resting on the annual returns.
