Lisäksi voimanlähteen hyötysuhde on parantunut 30 %:sta lähes 50 %:iin.
In this thesis a literature review was conducted on how the energy efficiency of Formula 1 racing cars has developed in 2007-2019. Key research questions are e.g. how the mass is lightened, how efficiency, power density and energy density are increased and how they have evolved. The main focus of the work is on the electrical components of the energy recovery and reuse systems used in Formula 1 cars, i.e. the hybrid system, and their development over the research period. Also there is reflection on how the technology developed in Formula 1 is utilized in ordinary road vehicles.
The study can be divided into two main periods, 2007-2013 and 2014-2019, as for the 2014 season there were major changes in the rules and regulation regarding the power source. On the basis of the review it can be concluded that during the examination period there has been major development especially in the field of hybrid technology, as in 2007 season there was no hybrid technology used at all. It was not until 2009 that hybrid technology began to be used in Formula 1. Thanks to the technical rule changes that came in force for 2014 season and onwards, Formula 1 effectively moved into hybrid era. Formula 1 cars have evolved to be even more efficient and faster while at the same time becoming more energy efficient and environmentally friendly, better meeting today’s trends and challenges in the car industry. The modern power sources used since 2014 are 20 % more powerful, produce 26 % less carbon dioxide emissions and consume 27 % less fuel compared to the power sources used in 2007-2013 even though the current power sources have less cylinders and a smaller engine volume. In addition, thermal efficiency of the power source has improved from 30 % to nearly 50 %.
Since Formula 1 is also a sport and business that should be entertaining for the viewers and generate money for its owners and not just a development platform for car manufacturers, arbitrary rules restricting technology often hampers the development of energy efficiency. If the rules were to allow it, the development of energy efficiency could have been even more significant.
