Tiivistelmä
Tutkielman tavoite on tutkia pelkästään pitkää positiota hyödyntävien vastavirran ja momentum-strategioiden suoriutumista Helsingin pörssissä. Strategioiden pohjalta muodostettujen portfolioiden suoriutumista verrataan muodostetun indeksin suoriutumiseen.
Momentum-strategioiden vastaavasti kolmesta kuukaudesta kahteentoista kuukauteen.
The purpose of this master’s thesis is to study the momentum and contrarian strategies in Helsinki stock exchange. The performance of the formed portfolios based on the strategies is compared with the index formed using the same data. The data employed consists of monthly stock returns of companies listed in Helsinki stock exchange between 1989 and 2018.
17 different contrarian strategies and 16 different momentum strategies are tested in the thesis. Contrarian strategies are tested using a formation period and holding periods of one to five years. Momentum strategies are tested using a formation period and holding periods of three to twelve months. The performance of the strategies is evaluated based on return, volatility, Sharpe ratios, maximum drawdowns, and information ratios.
The results of this master’s thesis show that the equal weighted long only contrarian portfolios systematically underperform the index. Only few of the tested strategies outperform the index. Instead of overreaction hypothesis or momentum reversals tax loss hypothesis seems to explain outperformance of the few contrarian strategies. All the tested equal weighted long only momentum strategies outperform the index. Some of the strategies outperform the index on a risk-adjusted basis. The momentum strategies do not outperform the index in a statistically significant way. Few of the tested momentum winner strategies outperform the momentum losers in a statistically significant way.
