Toisaalta taas uhkapeliteollisuuden indeksi hävisi kaikilla mittareilla markkinaindeksille. Kokonaisportfolio suoriutui kokonaisuudessaan hyvin tasaväkisesti markkinaindeksiin verratessa. The purpose of this bachelor 's thesis is to study the performance of sin stocks on the European stock market between 2010-2019. The aim was to find out whether the sin stocks have outperformed the general stock market as the previous study would suggest. In addition, efforts were made to identify differences in performance between selected sin industries, namely the alcohol, tobacco, and gambling industries.
All research material has been collected from the Datastream database, from which four industry-based portfolios for selected sin industries in the European market were selected and a combined sin portfolio was compiled from these four industry-based portfolios. The monthly closing values of the portfolios were used to calculate average annual returns and volatilities. In addition to raw returns, the success of the sin industries was also assessed using risk-adjusted performance meters which were Sharpe ratio, Treynor index and Jensen alpha.
The results obtained were in part inconsistent with previous studies on the subject, as Jensen’s alpha, for example, was unable to demonstrate statistically significant excess returns of any chosen sin industry. Of all the portfolios in the study the alcohol industry portfolios and especially the wine and distillation industry portfolio performed best, outperforming the market index with all the used performance meters and average annual return. On the other hand, the gambling industry portfolio lost to the market index by all performance meters. The combined sin portfolio performed very evenly compared to the market index.
