Tiivistelmä
Tämän kandidaatintutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää, esiintyykö Eurostoxx 50 indeksissä alhaisen volatiliteetin anomaliaa. Tutkielmassa selvitetään, alhaisen volatiliteetin portfolion menestymistä suhteessa korkean volatiliteetin portfolioon. Lisäksi tutkielmassa tarkastellaan mahdollisuutta saavuttaa ylisuurta tuottoa alhaisen volatiliteetin strategialla suhteessa markkinaindeksiin.
Tutkielmanajanjakso sijoittuu vuosien 2009–2019 välille ja käsiteltävä aineisto on Eurostoxx 50 indeksissä olevat osakkeet. Eurostoxx 50 indeksissä olevat yritykset jaotellaan kolmeen portfolioon historiallisen volatiliteettinsa mukaisesti. Portfolioiden suoriutumista analysoidaan absoluuttisilla tuotoilla sekä riskikorjatun tuoton mittareilla, kuten Sharpen luku, Treynorin ja Jensenin alfa.
Koko ajanjaksoa tarkastellen tutkielman tuloksista havaitaan keskimmäisen volatiliteetti portfolion suoriutuneen parhaiten, kun huomioidaan riskikorjattuja tuottoja, Sharpen lukua sekä Jensenin alfaa. Kuitenkin samaisen tarkasteluajan Treynorin luku indikoi, että alhaisimman volatiliteetin portfolio menestyi parhaiten riskiinsä nähden. Laskuperiodilla Jensenin alfan tunnusluvut portfolioille osoittavat alhaisemman volatiliteetin portfolioiden suoriutuneen parhaiten riskiinsä nähden. Tutkielman tarkasteluajanjakson tuloksien perusteella voidaan todeta, että Eurostoxx 50 indeksissä on mahdollisesti ollut havaittavissa viitteitä alhaisen volatiliteetin anomaliasta. Alhaisemman volatiliteetin osakkeet menestyivät koko tarkasteluperiodin aikana keskimääräisesti paremmin kuin markkinaindeksi. This bachelor's thesis aims to investigate the occurrence of the low volatility anomaly in the Eurostoxx 50 index. The study examined the success of a low volatility portfolio in comparison to a high volatility portfolio. Also, the dissertation examined the possibility of achieving excessive returns using a low-volatility strategy in relation to the market index.
The dissertation period covers the years 2009-2019, the material to be processed are the shares in the Eurostoxx 50 index. The companies in the Eurostoxx 50 index were divided into three portfolios according to their historical volatility. Portfolio performance was analyzed in terms of absolute return as well as risk-adjusted return measures such as Sharpe ratio, Treynor's index and Jensen’s alpha.
While evaluating the entire period of the dissertation, the results indicate that among the formed portfolios, the portfolio with the second least volatility outperformed the other portfolios, taking into account risk-adjusted returns, Sharpes index, and Jensen’s alfa. However, Treynor’s index for the same time period indicated that the portfolio with the lowest volatility performed best adjusted to its risk. During the downturn period, the calculated Jensen’s alfa values for the formed portfolios indicated that the portfolios with lower volatility performed best adjusted to their risk. Based on the results of the whole dissertation period, it can be concluded that there may have been indications of the low volatility anomaly in the Eurostoxx 50 index. On average the shares with lower volatility outperformed the market index, bearing in mind the whole dissertation period.
