In this research, a detailed study is made of which factors affect the lifespan and condition of the recovery boiler, based on which the possible remaining lifespan of the recovery boiler is assessed. The lifespan of a recovery boiler is affected by all the different damage mechanisms that can damage different parts of the pressure hull of the recovery boiler. In each different area of the recovery boiler, the possible damage can be of a very different style, depending mainly on the temperature, as well as corrosion and the clogging which is caused by boiler salt. Such various damage mechanisms include, for example, corrosion, microstructural changes, metal elongation, and fatigue. These various damages can be examined from the recovery boiler by non-destructive testing or by trace inspections. More attention should be paid to the materials of the recovery boiler because of its difficult furnace conditions. Damage to other recovery boilers is also examined to be able to anticipate possible weak points. Similarly, the lifespan of other recovery boilers provides indicative information on how old recovery boilers have been when they have been refurbished or decommissioned. The life cycle determination is assisted by RBMI analysis, which highlights the risk potential of different parts of the recovery boiler.
The focus of this research is to determine the remaining lifespan and condition of the recovery boilers SK5 and SK6 at the Imatra mill. Based on this research the remaining lifespan of the recovery boiler at the Imatra mill would be about 7-15 years. The assessment takes into account the current condition of the Imatra mill's recovery boilers, the general lifespan of all recovery boilers in Finland, and the general durability of the materials. Based on this research, special attention should be paid to the bypass pipes of the various bushings towards the end of the life cycle of the recovery boiler. All the modifications made to the recovery boilers of the Imatra mill have been mapped and their life cycle from commissioning to the present has been reviewed. All leaks and repairs to the pressure hulls of recovery boilers have been compiled into an Excel tool in connection with this work, which can be updated, and contains information on the auxiliary equipment of the recovery boilers. As the life cycle of the recovery boiler comes to an end, there are practically two possibilities, either to replace the entire recovery boiler or to upgrade the oldest parts of it. Future emission limits will also have a major impact on whether it is worth investing in an old recovery boiler or building a completely new one.
