Wind power generation capacity increase as zero-emission energy plays a greater role in total energy production. Therefore, wind turbines will also be built more and more in areas where ice accumulation on wind turbine structures is possible. Icing of a wind turbine can cause problems in energy production and must be considered for efficient energy production.
This bachelor’s thesis is a review of the literature and deals with the icing of wind turbines. The paper presents different types of ice and the process of its formation. The thesis also examines how icing affects the operation of wind turbines and how the formation of ice on structures of wind turbines can be prevented and how already accumulated ice can be removed. At the end of the thesis, the icing of wind turbines in Finland is briefly discussed.
In areas with a high level of icing during the year, icing can cause a significant decline in energy production. Even a light accumulation of ice weakens the power curve of the wind turbine considerably. In addition, the accumulation of the ice on the surface of the wind turbine strains its structures, reducing the lifetime of the wind turbine. Icing also poses safety risks in the vicinity of the wind turbine, for example, due to ice throwing.
