Lisäksi useammalla toimialalla, jolla on suuri työtapaturmariski, työtapaturmien määrä on vähentynyt pandemian aikana.
The COVID-19 pandemic started in early 2020 has had a major impact on people’s working and various industries. Organizations have not been able to operate normally due to various restriction measures which has led to a slowdown in many industries and changes in working patterns. The purpose of this thesis is to find out how the economic slowdown and changes in employment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have reflected in the case company’s customers workplace and commuting accidents in different industries.
The research is divided into two sections, a literature review and empirical study. The literature review focuses on how the pandemic forced employees around the world to work remotely and what other impacts the pandemic has had on employees working patterns and different industries. Also, the definition of an occupational accident, accidents in different industries and workers’ compensation insurance are handled in the literature review. The empirical study is carried out as a quantitative study using statistical methods. Based on the case company’s data, the study analyzes what kind of changes there have been in different industries’ workplace and commuting accidents during the pandemic compared to the time before pandemic.
The results show that in general the number of both workplace and commuting accidents has decreased during the pandemic. Especially in 2020, when the pandemic started, the number of accidents has been clearly lower than before the pandemic. The wide-scale shift to teleworking caused by the COVID-19 crisis has reduced the number of workplace and commuting accidents in industries where almost all workers have been able to work remotely. Also, in several industries with a high risk of occupational accidents, the number of accidents has decreased during the pandemic.
