Tiivistelmä
Negative environmental impacts have been measured, calculated, and reported for some time already. In addition to reducing emissions, many companies provide products or services that produce positive environmental impacts. However, an issue has been how to measure and report these positive impacts. Carbon handprint has been introduced as a solution to this problem.
This thesis calculated the carbon handprint for a new parcel delivery concept as an example of how Posti could utilize the carbon handprint for monitoring their positive environmental impacts. The calculation compared the new concept with the existing delivery chains in a specific area chosen for this study. The calculations were made with six different scenarios to see how different assumptions affect the results. The results of this calculation support the hypothesis that the new parcel delivery concept would create a carbon handprint for the area and its people, although the positive impacts were found quite modest.
Carbon handprint seems to be a useful tool for comparing different services or products and figuring where the positive and negative impacts are formed. Utilizing carbon handprint for the whole organization can be time-consuming. So, if the criterion is swiftness, carbon handprint may not be the best option for tracking the progress of positive environmental impacts of the whole organization. However, the calculation can be simplified by utilizing averages, doing good screening studies, and improving data availability. Negatiivisia ilmastovaikutuksia on mitattu, laskettu ja raportoitu jo jonkin aikaa. Päästövähennysten lisäksi monet yritykset tarjoavat tuotteita tai palveluita, jotka muodostavat positiivisia ilmastovaikutuksia. Ongelmana on ollut näiden positiivisten ilmastovaikutusten mittaaminen. Hiilikädenjälki esiteltiin tämän ongelman ratkaisemiseksi.
Tässä diplomityössä laskettiin hiilikädenjälki Postin uudelle paketinjakokonseptille, joka toimii esimerkkinä, kuinka Posti voisi hyödyntää hiilikädenjälkeä positiivisten ilmastovaikutusten seuraamiseen. Lasku vertaili uutta konseptia nykyiseen jakelujärjestelmään valitulla alueella. Laskenta tehtiin kuudella eri skenaariolla, jotta nähtäisiin kuinka eri oletukset vaikuttavat tuloksiin. Tulokset tukevat hypoteesia, että uusi paketinjakokonsepti muodostaisi hiilikädenjälkeä alueelle ja sen asukkaille, vaikkakin positiiviset vaikutukset jäävät vaatimattomiksi.
