The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to calculate the carbon footprint of a factory producing plastic products and create guidelines for reducing it. The study includes a theory section which covers carbon footprint calculation by standards and a calculation section in which the emission sources of the factory were identified, and the resulting carbon footprint was calculated by using Corporate Accounting and Reporting standard from GHG Protocol. Two carbon footprints, a concise version, and an extensive version, were calculated. Due to its stricter boundaries the concise one is more comparative to other companies’ carbon footprints. The more extensive one is used for analysis of the carbon footprint of the factory.
The calculation of the concise carbon footprint included direct emissions from the factory as well as emissions from the generation of the energy consumed. Based on selected boundaries the carbon footprint was 362 t CO2-eq. The more extensive carbon footprint also included emissions from the production of the materials and emissions from the waste treatment. The carbon footprint by the more extensive calculation was 9 295 t CO2-eq. 96 % of the carbon footprint was caused by the waste treatment and the production of the materials. The most effective way to reduce the carbon footprint would be to change the non-recycled fossil fuel derived polypropylene to an alternative with less emissions. The easier ways are to reduce the amount of raw material waste and change the energy consumed to less-emission option. This study also identified the need for a more accurate study of a hazardous waste treatment of the factory.
