Managing working capital with the help of reporting system : case: manufacturing company with project-based business

Abstract

The importance of working capital management and monitoring for companies profitability is widely recognized today, but companies face challenges in finding suitable ways to manage and monitor working capital. The aim of this thesis is to examine the ways of working capital management and monitoring in a manufacturing company, and to find concrete ways to optimize its individual components.

The theoretical part of the thesis presents how the working capital management is dealt with in the previous literature and research. The thesis is conducted qualitatively, and an action study is used as the methodology where the aim is to apply the best working capital management practices found in the literature. The data of the thesis has been collected from interviews with the employees of the case company, and by observing and getting acquainted with the processes and practices of the case company. The individuals selected for the interviews play an important role in the management and monitoring of working capital in the case company operations. The thesis aims to find and resolve the most significant challenges for the case company. The results of the thesis show that the challenges the case company faces in working capital management typical are quite typical for a manufacturing company. The biggest pain points are related to negotiating the payment terms of purchase and sales invoices as well as inventory management.

Käyttöpääoman hallinnan ja seurannan merkitys yritysten kannattavuudelle tunnetaan nykyään laajalti, mutta yritykset kohtaavat haasteita etsiessään itselleen sopivia tapoja hallita ja seurata käyttöpääomaa. Tämän tutkielman tavoitteena on tarkastella käyttöpääoman hallinnan ja seurannan keinoja sekä löytää konkreettisia tapoja optimoida yksittäisiä käyttöpääoman komponentteja teollisuusyrityksessä.

Tutkielman teoriaosuudessa esitellään aiemmasta kirjallisuudesta ja tutkimuksesta löydettyjä menetelmiä ja teorioita käyttöpääoman hallintaan ja seurantaan. Tutkielma toteutetaan kvalitatiivisena ja metodologiana käytetään toimintatutkimusta, jossa pyritään soveltamaan aiemmasta kirjallisuudesta löydettäviä parhaita käytäntöjä käyttöpääoman hallintaan. Tutkielmassa hyödynnettävä aineisto on kerätty caseyrityksen työntekijöiden haastatteluista sekä havainnoimalla ja tutustumalla caseyrityksen prosesseihin ja käytäntöihin. Haastatteluihin valituilla henkilöillä on tärkeä rooli caseyrityksen käyttöpääoman hallinnassa ja seurannassa. Tutkielman tavoitteena on löytää ja ratkaista caseyrityksen merkittävimmät haasteet. Tutkielman tulokset osoittavat, että caseyrityksen tyypilliset haasteet käyttöpääoman hallinnassa ovat varsin tyypillisiä teollisuuden alalla toimivalle yritykselle. Suurimmat kipukohdat liittyvät osto- ja myyntilaskujen maksuehtojen neuvottelemiseen sekä varastonhallintaan.
