Tiivistelmä
Kandidaatintyö on kirjallisuuskatsaus lentokonetekniikan kehitykseen.
The bachelor's thesis is a literature review on the development of aircraft technology. The thesis specifically looked at the development of large passenger aircraft in recent years, as well as which factors drive the development. The development was examined from the point of view of the aircraft engine and the aircraft frame.
A traditional aircraft engine works like an open gas turbine, but instead of generating electricity, it is optimized for generating thrust. The thrust produced by the engine is the force that moves the aircraft forward against the drag. The wings produce a lift that keeps the plane in the air. By reducing the drag and weight of the airplane, the required thrust and lift can be reduced.
The thesis revealed that the development is driven by an increase in flying, rising fuel prices, and concern for the environment. Engine efficiency is increased with higher bypass and pressure ratios. The emissions produced by the engine are reduced with larger air-to-fuel ratios and combustion optimization. In addition to increasing the bypass ratio, noise from the engine is prevented by absorbent materials and better mixing of the nozzle outflow. The weight of the frame and engine can be reduced with lighter and more durable materials such as composites. The fuselage can be made more aerodynamic by increasing the aspect ratio and design of the wings. With these changes, the planes can be made bigger and with a 40% bigger range, producing fewer emissions and noise than previous planes.
The thesis also revealed that due to the increase in flying, the aforementioned improvements will not be enough to achieve the emission reduction goals. That is why more radical reforms are mandatory. For example, biofuels, new aircraft designs, and electrification can help to achieve emission and noise reduction goals.
