VTT on suunnitellut käyttävänsä ISOCS-laitteistoja käytöstä poistettavien FiR 1 -tutkimusreaktorin ja VTT:n entisen aktiivisten näytteiden käsittelylaboratorion purkuprojekteissa syntyvien jätteiden aktiivisuuksien mittaamiseen.
During decommissioning of a nuclear facility large amounts of waste is generated, of which the activity and radionuclide contents must be determined. Based on the assessment activated or contaminated waste is sent to final repository as nuclear waste and clean waste can be cleared from regulatory control as conventional waste. The most common method for determining the activity and radionuclide contents of waste is using gamma spectrometry.
The three gammaspectrometric devices of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland surveyed in this Master’s thesis are so called ISOCS systems, whose detectors are compatible with ISOCS™ efficiency calibration software by Mirion Technologies. With the software it is possible to 3D-model the geometry of the measurement with the compatible detector in its entirety. After this the model is used to estimate the activity of the measured object. VTT has planned to use the ISOCS systems to assay the waste generated from the decommissioning projects of the FiR 1 reactor and VTT’s former radioactive materials research laboratory. This thesis was done as a part of the mandatory suitability assessment of these ISOCS systems for their planned usage, which will be reported to Finnish Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK).
In this thesis measurements were done with radioactive sources with known activity in different geometries. Also, the uncertainty factors related to the used efficiency calibration method, used gamma spectrum analysis software and In-Situ measurements in general were assessed. In addition to the development of the measurement methods for barrel waste packages, a quality control program was created, which can be used to ensure the condition of the used measurement system and the qualified performance of the measurements.
It was concluded that the ISOCS systems can estimate the activity very accurately, when the correspondence between the modelled and the true measured geometry is good. However, the method was found to be prone to mismatches between the modelled and measured geometries, and it was concluded that the system requires comprehensive understanding of gamma spectrometry from its user.
