Sustainable business model development and internationalisation are concepts that drew increased attention from researchers in management academic field. The former caused largely due to the climate change agenda, the latter largely due to of the on-going globalisation. Though the processes were studied separately or researched through a prism on how SBMs change when companies internationalise, there is a limited understanding on what interaction of SBM with multiple external environment, that is instigated by internationalisation, implies and how its dimensions are affected by it.
This paper aids in understanding of the ways national and local actors within a national industry context influences sustainable value creation. Furthermore, this study focuses on stakeholder activities in district heating systems and their participation in shaping the sustainability context of the industry which was lacked noticing from the academia. Additionally, the influence of stakeholder groups and their view of sustainability was investigated, and characterising features of stakeholders redefined.
The empirical part of the research is based on multiple case study design, consisting of Finnish, Danish and UK stakeholders in district heating industry. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 17 stakeholders from 16 organisations, representing four stakeholder groups and three national market environments. The paper helps to identify the key elements of sustainable business model creation to make it suitable for operations in three markets chosen.
