Analysis of blockchain-based access control systems : what merits do they offer over conventional access control systems?

As more and more information is available and being stored on the Internet, it is vital to manage the access control so that right people can have right access whenever required. Thus, the access control systems have gain added importance. Emerging technologies such as blockchain are proposed to be used to further strengthen the security of access control systems. This thesis thus studies the merits the use of blockchain could bring to access control systems.
Thematic analysis was performed on existing literature used to study the advantages of blockchain over conventional systems. The themes for the thematic analysis were found through Google Scholar. Around 100 existing research papers were analysed for identifying the themes and similarities in the existing research.
As outcome, it was found that blockchain could provide distribution, increased security and transparency to certain domains that require it. However, limitations such as scalability issues were discovered. Internetin avulla tallennetaan dataa ja tietoa enemmän kuin koskaan ennen. Täten, pääsynhallintajärjestelmien tärkeys lisääntyy. Uusia teknologioita kuten lohkoketjua on ehdotettu parantamaan pääsynhallintajärjestelmien turvallisuutta. Tämä tutkimus tutkii hyötyjä, joita lohkoketju voisi tuoda pääsynhallintajärjestelmiin.
