Win on Sunday, sell on Monday – the winning formula? : the impact of a Formula One Grand Prix win on stock value

Despite the great significance, very little research has been carried out in recent years on the economic impact of Formula 1. This thesis aims to investigate the impact of Formula 1 Grand Prix wins on the stock markets in the short term. By comparing the market reactions caused by individual teams, it is possible to assess the impact of the sponsor/team relationship or the position of the team on the reactions of investors. The study also identifies the events that caused the largest positive and negative reactions in order to assess the factors behind the reaction.
The event study method is used to investigate the stock market reactions. The research data consists of 79 events, i.e. Grand Prix wins, over the period of January 1st, 2019 to November 30th, 2022. The impact of the wins on the stock market is studied by calculating the average abnormal returns for the days in the event window and the cumulative average abnormal returns over periods within the event window. The races are run on weekends, so the Monday following the race is used as the event day.
The empirical results correspond well to previous research and the impact of profits on stock prices remains small but positive on average. The results for individual teams show that for Mercedes and Ferrari, the effect on the day of the event is mostly positive, while for Red Bull the effect is negative. Interestingly, for Red Bull, the returns are positive before the event. The results of Renault are not comparable as they are based on only one event. Suuresta merkityksestään huolimatta erityisesti Formula 1:n taloudellisia vaikutuksia on tutkittu viime vuosina hyvin vähän. Tässä tutkielmassa pyritään selvittämään, millaisia vaikutuksia Formula 1 Grand Prix -voitoilla on osakemarkkinoihin lyhyellä aikavälillä. Vertailemalla yksittäisten tallien aiheuttamia markkinareaktioita voidaan arvioida, mitä vaikutuksia sponsorin ja tallin yhteydellä tai tallin asemalla on sijoittajien reaktioihin. Tutkimuksessa eritellään myös suurimman positiivisen ja suurimman negatiivisen reaktion aiheuttaneet tapahtumat, jotta voidaan arvioida tekijöitä reaktion takana.
Osakemarkkinareaktioiden tutkimiseen sovelletaan tapahtumatutkimusmenetelmää. Aineisto koostuu 79 tapahtumasta eli Grand Prix -voitosta aikavälillä 1.1.2019 – 30.11.2022. Voittojen vaikutusta osakemarkkinaan tutkitaan laskemalla tapahtumaikkunan päivien keskimääräiset epänormaalit tuotot sekä tapahtumaikkunan kumulatiiviset keskimääräiset epänormaalit tuotot. Kilpailut ajetaan viikonloppuisin, joten kilpailua seuraavaa maanantaita käytetään tapahtumapäivänä.
