Tiivistelmä
Ilmastonmuutoksen torjumisessa energiasektori on yksi avaintekijöitä. Pariisin ilmastosopimuksessa on asetettu tavoitteeksi maapallon keskilämpötilan nousuksi korkeintaan 1,5 ˚C esiteolliseen aikaan verrattuna.
Useimmat Power-to-X -projektit sijaitsevat Euroopassa, erityisesti Saksassa. In the fight against climate change, the energy sector is one of the key factors. The Paris Climate Agreement has set a goal to limit the increase in global average temperature to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial times. The EU has set a goal to be carbon neutral by 2050, and Finland by 2035. Replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources alone is not enough to ensure the transition, but it is also necessary to enable the transition of heavy traffic and industry to carbon neutrality. Through Power-to-X technology carbon-free synthetic fuels can be created and energy can be stored in chemical form to balance the fluctuations in demand and supply of electricity produced by renewable energy.
The bachelor’s thesis explored the current state and future prospects of Power-to-X solutions. The work is a literature review on the subject and is based on research and articles on Power-to-X technology. The work introduces the Power-to-X technologies used and the possible end products. In addition, the work highlights some significant Power-to-X projects in Europe. The future prospects and potential were addressed in the latter half of the work.
Power-to-X projects are popular and their number is constantly growing. The development of electrolysis and carbon dioxide emission limits are key factors in the profitability of the Power-to-X process. Power-to-X has many advantages, such as versatility and the ability to smooth out fluctuations in renewable energy production. Most Power-to-X projects are located in Europe, specifically in Germany. Pilot plants have already demonstrated the profitability of the process, and if this continues in the future, they can also be applied outside of Europe. The transition to a hydrogen economy has been on the agenda for several years, but the timing of the transition is still uncertain.
