The purpose of this master’s thesis was to study the energy saving potential of the demand controlled ventilation system (DCV). This thesis studied the energy consumption of the DCV system of a kindergarten located in Helsinki over a four-week period and one-day period and compared it to the calculated energy consumption of the constant airflow ventilation (CAV) system. This thesis also studied the effect of the DCV adjustment methods on the energy consumption of the ventilation system and carbon dioxide concentration of the indoor air.
The actual measurement data of the DCV system was obtained from the Nuuka portal. Using the measurement data, the electrical energy consumption of the fans of the ventilation units of the DCV and CAV systems and the thermal energy consumption of the heating coil were calculated.
Based on the four-week review period, the DCV system achieved savings of up to 77 % in electrical energy of fans and up to 50 % in the thermal energy of heating coils. Based on the results of the one-day review, the DCV system achieved savings up to 76 % of the fans energy consumption. Based on this study, the DCV system can achieve considerable savings in electricity and heat energy consumption compared to the CAV system.
The thesis compared two DCV adjustment methods, the constant pressure and variable pressure adjusted DCV systems. The energy consumption data of three consecutive Fridays was assessed. Based on this study, the variable pressure adjusted DCV system can achieve a 33 % energy saving potential of the fans electrical energy consumption compared to the constant pressure adjusted DCV system. The adjustment methods were found to have no effect on the carbon dioxide concentration of the indoor air.
