This thesis is made for an engineering and consulting company AFRY Finland Oy. Real-time optimization of the cogeneration of heat and electricity has turned out to be particularly important as the energy sector has faced changes. The control solutions of the district heating system and the thermal energy storage have a significant effect on the operation of the cogeneration plant. The main aim of the thesis is to demonstrate the functionality of controls based on Balance+ control concept developed by AFRY. The concept is developed for control of power plant processes, and it is based on balance calculations. The study focuses on the controls of the district heating system and the thermal energy storage regarding to the power balance of the system.
The study is carried out with the Simatic PCS7 process control system, which is used to model the simplified simulator of the cogeneration plant’s district heating system based on the energy and mass balances. The functionality of the control solutions is demonstrated by simulating different operating situations of the cogeneration plant and analyzing the behavior of the most relevant parameters of the process.
As a result of the thesis, it was found that the simulator can be used to properly demonstrate the functioning of the controls and the process in different situations. Also, it was found that the controls react in the desired way and as in the real process. The balance calculation and defined limits control the components of the system accurately and quickly. The process remains relatively stable, and sufficient heat load can be supplied to the system. In addition, it was found out that with the applications of thermal energy storage, significant benefits in the real-time optimization of cogeneration can be achieved. Although the real district heating systems are always different from each other and more complex than a simplified simulator, the developed simulator can be considered functional for demonstrating of control solutions.
