Tiivistelmä
Työssä tutkitaan Loviisan voimalaitoksella olevien boorianalysaattorien neutroniumpilähteiden suositellun käyttöiän jatkomahdollisuuksia, sillä niiden suositeltu käyttöikä on loppunut.
This thesis examines possibilities of continuing the recommended working life of boron analyzer’s sealed neutron sources at the Loviisa power plant, as their recommended working life has expired. The thesis aims to investigate best procedure to extend the recommended working life of the boron analyzer’s neutron sources. The problem is mainly addressed from perspectives of radiation safety and cost effectiveness. The thesis was carried out for the Radiation Protection Organization of the Loviisa power plant.
The primary option is to extend the recommended working life of the neutron source by making a leak test. The leak test inspection is divided into three different procedures, where in two of the procedures the analyzer must be dismantled either partly or completely and in one of the procedures the analyzer will not be dismantled. A secondary option is replacing the sealed neutron source with a new one. The secondary option is compared to the leak test by considering the perspectives of radiation safety and cost effectiveness.
In the thesis it was discovered that the most cost effective and safest method from the perspective of radiation protection is to take a swipe sample from a non-dismantled analyzer. With the swipe sample and other supporting facts can be concluded that the neutron source of the analyzer is leak tight. The dismantling of the analyzer would result in large radiation doses, which would not be in line with the ALARA principle.
