This study was implemented for a company that is the manufacturer of different kinds of plastic pipe products for land construction. The purpose was to improve the manufacturing line of the spiral seam pipe by utilizing the Lean Six Sigma method. Part of the waste was removed by improving the technical state of the manufacturing line and by improving the work methods how operating the line more efficiently. The main goal was to improve the production rate of the manufacturing line.
The theoretical part of this study presents the key concepts and minor history of the Lean principles. It also includes the Six Sigma method, operations management, warehouse management, and measurement of these management operations sections by necessary parts. The references used consist of academic publications and general literature on this topic. The empirical material was collected by observing the spiral seam pipe manufacturing line, collecting process data, and with the survey pointed to the line operators. The empirical material was analyzed in the Lean Six Sigma workshop, and it revealed new views of the collected material.
The manufacturing line’s average speed increased by 27 % during the project. Also, the average meter weight of different pipe products was decreased by 11 %. Measured with the OEE meter there was an improvement of 10 %. One goal of this study was also the reduction of downtime hours. Achievement of this goal was 46 % when the target was set to 20 %. The targets set for the project were achieved with the actions implemented in the manufacturing line’s maintenance, efficient operation, and reporting. The methods can be utilized and applied to the company’s other manufacturing lines, and it enables the scaling of positive effects which has considerable economic benefits for the company.
