Työn tarkoituksena on kartoittaa edellä mainittujen teknologioiden teknistaloudellista potentiaalia osana CHP-laitosta. Työssä tarkastellaan esimerkkilaskentojen avulla lähemmin sähkökattilaa, kaukolämpöakkua sekä kuoren kuivausta viirakuivurilla. Sähkökattila tarjoaa vaihtoehtoisen ja kustannustehokkaan tavan tuottaa lämpöä sähkön ollessa edullista. Kaukolämpöakun avulla voidaan puolestaan optimoida sähköntuotantoa ajallisesti. Kuoren kuivaus kasvattaa sen tehollista lämpöarvoa ja energiamäärää, jolla voidaan korvata osa polttoaineen hankinnasta.
Työssä käsitellyistä teknologioista suurin osa on kypsyysasteeltaan kaupallisella tasolla. Energiavarastoista jotkin teknologiat vaativat vielä kehitystä saavuttaakseen kaupallisen tason. Lisäksi lämpöpumpuilla on lämpötilatasoon liittyviä rajoitteita. The average market price and price volatility of electricity have increased significantly in recent years. Electricity price volatility is affected, for example, by weather-dependent renewable electricity production, such as wind and solar power, which capacity is expected to grow strongly in the future. In addition, the demand for wood fuels has increased while the supply has decreased, which has led to an increase in scarcity and prices. The rapidly changing operating environment guides CHP plants to develop their flexibility and efficiency so that the operation of the plants would be profitable in the future as well.
This thesis investigates the development of flexibility and efficiency of a CHP plant by means of power-to-heat technologies, energy storage and wood fuel drying. The aim of the thesis is to map the techno-economic potential of the aforementioned technologies as part of a CHP plant. In the thesis, with the help of example calculations, a closer look is taken at the electric boiler, the district heating battery, and the drying of the bark with a belt dryer. The electric boiler offers an alternative and cost-effective way to produce heat when the price of electricity is low. The district heating battery can be used to optimize electricity production over time. The drying of bark increases its effective heating value and the amount of energy, which can be used to replace part of the purchase of fuel.
Most of the technologies discussed are at a commercial level of maturity. Regarding energy storage, some technologies still require development to reach a commercial level. In addition, heat pumps have limitations related to the temperature level. The electric boiler, district heating battery and belt dryer are tested commercial level technology. The results of the calculations show that it is possible to achieve great economic benefits with the technologies in question in the right operating environment. However, the potential is affected by many things, such as electricity and fuel price trends, which are difficult to predict.
