Työn pääpainona on kelluvien aurinkovoimaloiden ekosysteemivaikutukset.
Kelluva aurinkovoima on kasvava energian tuotantomuoto.
The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to gather the effects of floating solar power plants on water ecosystems. Research method of the thesis is literature review, and the theory and results are based on prior studies and publications on the topic. The theory section of the thesis includes an introduction to aquatic ecosystems, solar power, and solar power plants in aquatic ecosystems. The main focus of the thesis are the effects of the solar power plant on the water ecosystems.
Floating solar energy is a growing technology. Floating solar energy is raising interest around the world, because it can help save valuable land space. The problem with ground-based solar energy plants is that those can need up to 20 times more land space than traditional fossil-fueled power plants. Floating solar plants are installed on a water body and it’s possible to create hybrid systems where floating solar power is used with another power plant, like wind or hydro power plant.
Based on the results obtained in the bachelor’s thesis, floating solar power plants have both positive and negative effects on aquatic ecosystems. The most significant benefits in terms of the ecosystem are reduction of water evaporation, reduction of harmful algal blooms and new growing platforms for various organisms offered by the floating structures. The most significant disadvantages in terms of the ecosystem are reduction of photosynthesis of aquatic plants, loss of biodiversity, spreading of invasive species and disturbance on the bottom of the water body.
