Identifying sustainability business opportunities in technology project implementation : a case study from corporate level to operational level

Abstract

Sustainability has been integrated into industrial companies’ strategy, challenging the production level to develop its operations in accordance with the sustainability targets. However, many companies are still in the early stages of strategy implementation and operational development. The aim of this thesis was to identify business opportunities that support industrial companies in achieving their sustainability targets through technology. The thesis studied the role of technology in promoting sustainability, the impact of industrial sustainability targets on investments and the integration of sustainability into projects. The research was conducted as a literature review and case study, focusing on technology projects implemented by Siemens Osakeyhtiö studied through semi-structured interviews.

The research results indicated that sustainability is part of the industrial companies' strategy, but it does not yet guide the implementation of projects. The technology projects under the study made the operations of the production plant more efficient, so the energy consumption per production decreased and the companies' environmental impact indirectly decreased. In order to promote sustainability, technology projects should meet company-specific targets, reduce plant-specific environmental impacts, use data to identify development points, and monitor the impact of the project using the sustainability indicators of the company

Kestävä kehitys on tullut osaksi teollisuusyritysten strategiaa haastaen tuotantotason kehittämään toimintaansa kestävän kehityksen tavoitteiden mukaisesti. Useissa yrityksissä strategian jalkauttaminen ja toiminnan kehittäminen ovat kuitenkin vielä alkutekijöissään. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli tunnistaa liiketoimintamahdollisuuksia, jotka edesauttavat teollisuusyrityksiä saavuttamaan kestävän kehityksen tavoitteensa teknologian avulla. Työssä tutkittiin teknologian roolia kestävän kehityksen edistäjänä, kestävän kehityksen tavoitteiden vaikutusta investointeihin ja kestävän kehityksen sisällyttämistä hankkeisiin. Työ toteutettiin kirjallisuuskatsauksena ja tapaustutkimuksena keskittyen Siemens Osakeyhtiön toteuttamiin hankkeisiin, joita tutkittiin teemahaastattelujen kautta.

Tutkimustulokset osoittivat, että kestävä kehitys on osana yritysten strategiaa, mutta se ei vielä ohjaa hankkeiden toteutumista. Tutkitut teknologiahankkeet tehostivat tuotantolaitosten toimintaa, jolloin energiankulutus tuotantoa kohden pieneni ja yritysten ympäristövaikutukset vähenivät epäsuorasti. Kestävän kehityksen edistämiseksi teknologiahankkeiden tulisi vastata yrityskohtaisiin tavoitteisiin, pienentää laitoskohtaisia ympäristövaikutuksia, hyödyntää dataa kehityskohteiden tunnistamiseksi ja seurata hankkeen vaikutusta yrityksen kestävän kehityksen mittareiden avulla.
