Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis was to learn more about the recruitment needs and intentions of local businesses in the South Karelia region. The aim was to find out about the companies’ interest in working with students, as well as their past hiring practices and the main strategical intentions to hire international talent. The thesis also aimed to find out about what the companies’ main obstacles are for not hiring international employees yet.
The theoretical background discusses present-day human resource management, organizational diversity ad its benefits and challenges, diversity management, intention and planned behaviour, the international workforce in Finland and a regional overview of South Karelia. The empirical data for this research was collected from companies that originate from in South Karelia and companies that originate from other areas in Finland but have offices and significant operations South Karelia by using a questionnaire.
The findings of the thesis show that the companies’ main strategical intention to hire international talent is opportunity-driven, but capability-driven and need-driven factors are almost as common. The findings also show that the main obstacles to employment are communication challenges and company infrastructures that do not support employing international talents.
