The impact of key events of the Russia-Ukraine war on excess returns of Finnish and Swedish companies

Abstract

This bachelor’s thesis studies the effects of three key events of the Russia-Ukraine war on the excess returns of Finnish and Swedish companies. The purpose of the thesis is to better understand the firm-level reactions of the two countries and provide evidence of whether there is a difference in the reactions between the firms of the two countries.

The study uses event study methodology to examine the effects of the events. The abnormal returns were calculated over a 21-day event window, from T-10 to T+10 around the announcements of the events. The estimation windows were 250 days long from T-260 to T-11. The reactions of the companies are examined by analyzing the abnormal returns and comparing them between the three events and between the two countries. The research period is from the beginning of 2021 to the end of June 2023.

The results suggest that the announcements of the three key events of the war caused significant market reactions both in Finland and Sweden, with reactions being more severe in Finland. Negative events caused negative reactions and positive events caused positive reactions. The results indicate that the war events affect Finland more severely because Finland is geographically closer to the war zone. The results support the findings of previous research and provide evidence for the hypothesis that areas closer to the war zone are affected more severely by war events.

Tämä kandidaatintutkielma tutkii Venäjän-Ukrainan sodan kolmen keskeisen tapahtuman vaikutuksia suomalaisten ja ruotsalaisten yritysten ylituottoihin. Tutkielman tarkoituksena on paremmin ymmärtää maiden yritystasolla tapahtuvia reaktioita ja luoda näyttöä siitä, onko maiden yritysten reaktioiden välillä eroa.

Tutkimus on tapahtumatutkimus. Epänormaalit tuotot laskettiin 21 päivän tapahtumajaksolla, T-10:stä T+10:een. Estimointi-ikkunat olivat 250 päivää, T-260:sta T-11:een. Reaktioita analysoidaan tarkastelemalla epänormaaleja tuottoja ja vertaamalla niitä kolmen valitun tapahtuman ja tutkittavien maiden välillä. Tutkimusjakso on vuoden 2021 alusta vuoden 2023 kesäkuun loppuun.

Tulokset viittaavat, että sodan kolmen keskeisen tapahtuman julkistamiset aiheuttivat merkittäviä markkinareaktioita sekä Suomessa että Ruotsissa, reaktioiden ollessa suuruudeltaan merkittävämpiä Suomessa. Negatiiviset tapahtumat aiheuttivat negatiivisia reaktioita ja positiiviset tapahtumat positiivisia reaktioita. Tulokset osoittavat, että sotatapahtumat vaikuttavat Suomeen merkittävämmin, koska Suomi on maantieteellisesti lähempänä sota-aluetta. Tulokset tukevat aiempien tutkimusten löydöksiä ja tarjoavat tukea hypoteesille, jonka mukaan alueet, jotka ovat lähempänä sota-aluetta, reagoivat voimakkaammin sodan tapahtumiin.
