Developing sustainability reporting in the food industry

Abstract

This master’s thesis was conducted to facilitate the case company’s sustainability reporting process. Prior to the thesis annual sustainability reporting was particularly laborious as the person compiling the report had to extract every piece of data from gathered Excel files one by one. The thesis was carried out using qualitive research methods as a case study. The thesis consisted of two sections, literature review and empirical part. The literature review used printed and online sources which was of great importance as the printed source material on these topics is scarce. In the literature review different frameworks which sustainability can and must be measured and reported against in EU-based alcoholic beverage industry were explored. The empirical part consisted of two phases. The first one presented the case company’s industry and sustainability reporting and linked the frameworks from the literature review to the company’s operating models. The sources for this section were interim interviews with key personnel and external consultants that work in collaborating companies. Also, the Sustainability Roadmap of the case company was introduced, and its sustainability objectives were presented. In the second phase a survey was conducted to collect different software that different service providers offer for collecting sustainability data and especially for ESG reporting. Several online sources were used in this phase, as they contained summaries and recommendations of different software. More detailed information on the software were collected through each company’s website. The results were compiled into a table from where the case company can further explore them if it decides to do so. As the last part of the second phase a deeper look was conducted for the sustainability solution that SAP offers since the company already has SAP ERP in place. The sources for this part were SAP’s online material and an interim interview with consultants from SAP and the material that they provided. During the deepening process, the potential of SAP Sustainability Control Tower for ESG and CSRD reporting were identified. This led to the further exploration of the Control Tower. At the end of the whole study, a proposal for the company was created on how they could facilitate sustainability reporting in the future.

Tämä diplomityö tehtiin case-yrityksen vastuullisuusraportoinnin helpottamiseksi. Ennen työn aloitusta vuosittainen vastuullisuusraportointi oli erityisen työläs prosessi, jossa yhdisteltiin dataa eri organisaation osista, eri henkilöiden toimesta, erillisiin Excel-tiedostoihin, joista vastuullisuusraportin muodostava henkilö sai kaikki asiat yksitellen poimia. Työ tehtiin kvalitatiivista tutkimusmenetelmää noudattaen tapaustutkimuksena. Kirjallisuusosion lähteinä toimivat niin painettu kirjallisuus kuin verkkoaineistokin, jonka merkitys oli aiheessa laaja, koska painettua lähdemateriaalia aihepiiristä on niukasti saatavilla. Kirjallisuusosioissa tutkittiin erilaisia viitekehyksiä, joita vasten vastuullisuusdataa voidaan ja joudutaan mittaamaan ja raportoimaan EU:n alueella toimivassa alkoholijuomateollisuudessa. Empiirinen osuus koostui kahdesta vaiheesta. Ensimmäisessä vaiheessa esiteltiin case-yrityksen toimialaa ja yhdistettiin kirjallisuusosiossa tutkittuja viitekehyksiä yrityksen toimintamalleihin. Lähteinä tässä osiossa toimivat välihaastattelut case-yrityksen avainhenkilöiden sekä case-yrityksen kanssa yhteistyössä toimivien ulkoisten konsulttien kanssa. Lisäksi esiteltiin yrityksen vastuullisuustiekarttaa ja siinä olevia vastuullisuustavoitteita. Toisessa osuudessa tehtiin selvitys siitä, millaisia sovelluksia eri palvelutarjoajilla on vastuullisuuden datan keräämiseen ja erityisesti ESG-raportointiin. Tässä lähteinä käytettiin useita verkkolähteitä, joissa oli yhteenvetoja ja suosituksia eri sovelluksista. Sovelluksista etsittiin tarkempaa tietoa yksittäin jokaisen yrityksen verkkosivuston kautta. Tuloksista koostettiin taulukko, jonka avulla case-yritys voi tarkemmin perehtyä eri sovelluksiin, niin päättäessään. Toisen osuuden lopuksi syvennyttiin SAP:n tarjoamiin vastuullisuusratkaisuihin, koska yrityksellä on ennestään SAP-toiminnanohjausjärjestelmä käytössään. Lähteinä tässä toimivat SAP:n verkkoaineisto sekä SAP-konsulttien kanssa käyty välihaastattelu ja heiltä saatu materiaali. Syventymisen aikana havaittiin SAP Sustainability Control Towerin mahdollisuudet sekä ESG- että CSRD -raportoinnin helpottamiseksi ja siksi siihen syvennyttiin muita tarkemmin. Tutkimuksen lopuksi luotiin ehdotus yritykselle siitä, kuinka vastuullisuusraportointia voisi tulevaisuudessa helpottaa.
