Comparing guidelines for nature positive

Abstract

As Nature Positive has gained traction as a term, effectively replacing No Net Loss and Net Positive Impact, in the sustainability space, guides have emerged promising to help companies achieve a Nature Positive status or to reduce their impact on nature loss. The goal of this thesis was to discover whether or not the five different Roadmaps to Nature Positive released by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) were all necessary and also whether or not the roadmaps were useful if the company’s ultimate goal is to set the Science Based Targets Network’s (SBTN) Science-Based Targets for Nature. The thesis found that WBCSD provided large amounts of sector-specific information and instructions that could help a company in that specific sector reach its goals of setting targets to reduce its impact on nature. SBTNs guides were not sector-specific although guidance for setting the targets was divided between land-based and freshwater-based activities. Still, SBTN provided detailed step-by-step guidance to help companies set their targets. The thesis found that WBCSDs sector-specific roadmaps provided useful instructions for companies in the provided sectors. However, the roadmap for all businesses was not as detailed and thus SBTNs guides could be more helpful for companies not in one of the four sectors to which WBCSD provides roadmaps.

Luontopositiivisuus-termin käytön yleistyessä, käytännössä korvaten No Net Loss ja Nature Positive Impact -termit kestävän kehityksen piirissä, on ilmestynyt oppaita, jotka lupaavat auttaa yrityksiä saavuttamaan luontopositiivisen statuksen tai vähentämään vaikutustaan luontokatoon. Tämän kandidaatintyön tavoite oli tarkastella ovatko kaikki World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) viisi eri tiekarttaa tarpeellisia ja myös ovatko tiekartat ylipäänsä hyödyllisiä, jos yrityksen lopullinen päämäärä on asettaa Science Based Targets Networkin (SBTN) tieteeseen perustuvia tavoitteita luonnolle. Työssä havaittiin, että WBCSD tarjosi paljon tietoja ja ohjeita tietyille sektoreille, mikä voisi auttaa yrityksiä saavuttamaan tavoitteensa vähentääkseen vaikutustaan luontoon. SBTNn ohjeistukset eivät olleet tarkoitettu millekään tietylle sektorille, mutta ohjeet tavoitteiden asettamiseksi oli jaettu maan ja makean veden toimintoihin. Silti SBTNn ohjeistukset tavoitteiden asettamiseksi olivat hyvin yksityiskohtaisia. Työssä havaittiin, että WBCSDn tiekartat tarjosivat hyödyllistä ohjeita niille yrityksille, jotka kuuluvat niihin sektoreihin, joille alakohtaista tietoa oli tarjolla. Kuitenkin tiekartta, joka oli tarkoitettu kaikille aloille, ei ollut yhtä yksityiskohtainen, joten SBTNn ohjeistukset voivat olla hyödyllisempiä niille yrityksille, jotka eivät kuulu yhteenkään neljästä sektorista, joille WBCSD tarjoaa omaa tiekarttaa.
